I forgot my retainers, so my mom had to mail those lol.

Hooks for the wall, sharpies, ethernet cord (didn’t forget, just didn’t know I would want it)

Not allowed in dorms in my school, and this is actually enforced. Apparently it has to do with fire code. The solution is to get a surge protector with the longest cord you can find.

Technically not allowed either, but as long as you’re careful not to lose any paint when you take them off it doesn’t matter. I must have used about two dozen around my room for posters and hooks.

definitely the remote for the TV I forgot mine and several other floormates did the same.

I had to get scissors and a power strip last year–nothing major. I think most people tend to over-pack.

You could always use more posters, though. Dorm room walls can be a lot emptier than you think. I also brought a bunch of books from home just to fill up my shelves. They really contributed to the feel of the room, even though I never opened most of them. A year’s worth of freshman books isn’t enough to fill a good bookshelf, IMHO.

A bathrobe and shower shoes. Especially if you have communal bathrooms. I had to go three days running to and from the bathroom in a towel while hulking football players purposefully roamed the girls’ wing of the halls.

I remembered the ethernet chord this year, but apparently my dorm doesn’t have data jacks. (Like ***?) I thought all dorms on campus did, apparently ours only has wifi… but seeing as how it’s just me and my roomie using our wifi… it’s actually not that slow.

I forgot an umbrella this year and last, which is stupid because it’s like a monsoon here fairly regularly.

I also forgot my Bible. Did the same thing last year.

Nylon net scrubber loofah, maybe?

One of my daughter’s friends forgot to bring a backpack.

When I was in the dorm, any guy who got a splinter came around asking girl friends for tweezers, so I sent my son with a set of tweezers in his supply bag. He’ll probably get one splinter in four years, but when he does, he’ll have tweezers on hand. :)

The controllers to your freaking game consoles. I forgot to bring at least one when Halo Reach came out and had to have my brother ship me one. It was hell.

lol That’s pretty ****ing specific. …What’s the brand name of that stuff?

Ours has them in the vending machines. Durex, 3 for $1.

Our sophomore son forgot light bulbs. He really needed one for his desk lamp because his room only had one very dim light in the middle of the ceiling. He purchased a bulb at the school bookstore at an outrageous price (he had to have it tho, to see). Won’t ever forget them again.

Last year son had the community bathroom used by all on the floor. This year he and his roommate share a bathroom with just two other guys. They were using paper towels to dry their hands because no one brought hand towels. Picked him up this weekend and went shopping for a few odds and ends and got several hand towels for a buck a piece.

If you can buy it after moving in, then you probably didn’t need to bring it in the first place. Pack light and move fast.

Here they have them in a bin at the Health Services center. It’s right by the receptionist’s desk, which makes it a little awkward, but I understand the need to make sure that someone doesn’t take them all.

School stores are infamous for overcharging for things, and prices in general at a typical college town are often higher than average. I also don’t get why move-in day has to be such a rush. Better to bring stuff from home and save much-needed cash.

Pillows :/

And socks this year. The pillows thing was last year.

water bottle.

mini stapler

Formal clothing, a lot of people think that they won’t need it but you always end up using it. When I was pledging I had to be dressed semi-formal every Monday, all day and for every meeting on Sunday.

Never saw that coming and was definitely unprepared.

A doormat. Maybe it’s just me but I don’t like walking with shoes on in my room.

A small sewing kit with a few needles, at least a small spool each of white and black thread and maybe a needle threader. A flashlight. If a personal printer was bought, several changes of ink cartridges for that printer. There’s nothing like getting a frantic call in the middle of the night when the stores are all closed and the paper is due the next day and it can’t be printed out because the black ink cartridge has run out. (jury-rigged solution: print it in dark blue).

I kept the chips of baby blue paint that flaked off my wall when I removed my command strips. Will I still be reprimanded by my RA? The chips are in a plastic ziplock bag beneath my bed.

How noticeable is it?
