Surprising that Seton Hall beat Rutgers for being “underrated”, given how much NJ students despise Rutgers.

It does look like few private schools make the list; besides Seton Hall, there are BYU - Idaho, St. Thomas (MN), and American (DC) in this list.

How did UCSC get “underrated” relative to schools like CSULA and several other CSUs, which seem to be regarded a lot worse than they actually are?

UIUC is not underrated…just what they need to hear. Now in-state tuition will go up even higher!

Agree about UAB, though. And Missouri S&T.

University of Wyoming is simultaneously the most overrated and underrated school in the state.

A look at the listings shows not ratings but a school in each state that is underrated compared to how it should be nationally ranked. This is why some states have much higher rated schools listed than others. University of Wisconsin-Madison is listed for WI because it is not nationally ranked/rated as high as it actually should be. A small private school in next door Minnesota is listed, not U of M (Minn). Think of these schools as hidden gems when compared to their ranking peers. And, of course, any ratings/rankings are subjective to a degree- hence the controversies about which school should have been the one listed.

PS- I have difficulty with rating/ranking differences/nuances and so used both.

I saw this list and wondered why UNC-Chapel Hill was on the list. Underrated? By whom? UNC does have great academics by not a high acceptance rate. They list a 33% acceptance rate for UNC (in the stats link) which certainly isn’t low. For 2014, the acceptance rate was 28% overall–17% out of state and 52% instate. Even with a 50% acceptance rate, UNC is really only a safety school for top NC students. For out of state, its not just “highly competitive” its a crapshoot. I think NC State or UNC-Wilmington would have been better underrated NC public choices.

The list is an absolute joke. The University of Oklahoma has such a high acceptance rate not because it’s “underrated” (as anyone who’s even passed through Oklahoma can attest), but because it’s located in a lower population state with poor K-12 public education. The same is true for many of the schools on the list ranging from UN Reno to Mississippi State to University of Nebraska.

Michigan Tech is spot-on. First thing that popped into my head.

Puh-lease.

UNC-Chapel Hill underrated??? That must be a joke. I would give the underrated award in North Carolina to NC State University.

;What I gained from this list is the most underrated college in each state is a university. What about the colleges?

Agree with Michigan Tech great school but kids have to think twice about the location and tend to choose other engineering schools but it’s a heck of a value

That’s interesting, before I clicked the link I thought to myself in CA it would be UCSC… :)

I thought UCSC was pretty highly rated myself.
Of all the public schools in CA, that is where D was most interested & we are out of state.
This is another list that goes by income, but it also rates highly the CA schools.

Im pleasantly surprised at how well students from the art & design schools are doing.
I would worry they would all become baristas.

UF? really It is hardest state U to be admitted to, especially the Honors college. If they had said New College, i would be more apt to believe this silly study.

Thank you, bookworm! I was expecting New College, but when I saw a gator on that map I gave the biggest eye roll. UF is anything but underrated.

Ludicrous for my state (Illinois) as well as many others. In no way is UIUC underrated. It’s also not considered a safety school for many good Illinois students, particularly in majors like Engineering and Business.

Oh lord. Seton Hall is under-rated??? If anything, it’s over-rated because people know the basketball team. I’d agree Rutgers, or even one of the satellites like Montclair or Stockton. For private colleges, maybe Stevens Tech. Pretty much everything before SHU.

Somebody is getting paid for doing less than adequate research. Despicable

UNC is not a safety school for anyone, including top students in NC. Plenty of valedictorians and other very high-achieving students do not get in. Anyone who depends on a UNC admission is not being realistic.
