the NASM rules...Please help me

Hi everyone,

I have been accepted to Indiana Bloomington with great scholarship. I have signed the enrollment confirmation, and the letter said "I agree that after May 1 of the calendar year of matriculation, I will not consider any other offer of admission from an institutional member of the National Association of Schools of Music for the next academic year."
But the thing is, I am on waitlist of NEC which I want to go better. So far NEC haven't worked on wailist yet and May 1 has passed. Since NEC and IU both are member of NASM, I am wondering if I am accepted by NEC can I still reject IU and go to NEC? Will NEC reject me because I have accpted IU first?
Somebody might say that you will only lose your deposit. But IU didn't require me to pay the deposit....

Does any one know that if NASM has any rule about this?
any information will be appreciated!

sidneylu, your answer is here. http://nasm.arts-accredit.org/index.jsp?page=FAQ+15</a> It is strongly discouraged and NEC would not be able to offer you financial assistance for the first term. They most likely would not extend the offer to you when they know you have accepted another offer. When DD decided on a late admission she had to state that she had not accepted any other offers before they would even extend the offer.

According to the rule they are not supposed to offer talent-based aid during the first term, but they can offer financial aid. I don’t know if NEC is part of NASM, but they are known not to offer full “need” anyway, and tend to give little merit aid. If NEC accepts you, you will need to get a letter of release from IU, which should not be a problem.

NEC is listed on the web page, but glassharmonica is right, it does not affect need based aid. If they do offer they will ask and you must tell them about the previous acceptance. Most likely the release will have to be done before the formal acceptance but you can always contact NEC and IU and ask. Admissions folks are used to these kinds of questions. Most of the time you don’t’ even have to say who you are to ask the the theoretical questions :)

NEC does follow NASM protocol, if NEC pulls you off the waitlist and they will ask you to get a formal release from the other program. It is usually no big deal, schools are used to this, and there will be no penalty other than losing any deposit you put down. NEC is not known for great merit aid, so it is likely you would not lose much by them not being able to offer you merit aid. I can’t speak about how long it will take to hear back from NEC in terms of getting off the waitlist, that depends on other kids declining, which studio teachers are on your list have openings and if other kids get pulled off the waitlist before you…I suspect if you don’t hear back in the next week or so, that odds are you won’t get off the waitlist, but that is only a guess, and it doesn’t hurt to wait and see.

The others have addressed your waitlist issuebut I just want to ask something about you saying you won’t lose the deposit because you didn’t have to pay one. My son just committed to IU on Thursday and we had to scan and email the scholarship form which it sounds like you did. However, there was also a deposit ($100) to be paid by May 1 to the university itself. This you had to do through ISTART. This confirms your place in the fall at Indiana. It is the deposit that people are saying you will lose if you end up going to NEC. The priority housing application and deposit were also due by May 1. There is a form that needs to be completed along with a $300 deposit. If you go to NEC you can get back $200 of the housing deposit if you let them know by July 1.

I apologize for this post if you have already done these things.

Thank you every one for answering me! that really helps a lot!!

@BCVIOLINMOM‌ OMG I don’t think I paid any deposit to IU. I didn’t even register for ISTART account. And I didn’t receive any form with deposit…But I still receive a new student orientation email few days ago. Hm…Is that because I am International student? I have asked other International student, she said there is no any deposit to be paid…
All I did is sent back an enrollment confirmation letter and reply a scholarship email! Did I miss anything? Thank you for telling me BCVIOLINMOM!

@sidneylu, I will send you a PM. My son is also international so I can at least let you know what we have done.
