The New Marshall Business Admin Pre-Requisites

Hi everyone, I'm a current sc sophomore undergrad trying to apply for the marshall business program. Recently Marshall released an updated list of Pre-Reqs that dropped the number of required classes to apply from five (WRIT 140, MATH 118+, ECON-203, ECON-205, & MATH-218) to three (WRIT-140, ECON-251, MATH-118+) for entering 2010 freshman and later [unfair!]. I've only completed 140 & ECON-203, so I'm considering switching my catalog years so I'm eligible for the new pre-reqs.

What I was wondering was since ECON-203 and ECON-251 are listed as giving duplicate credit (ECON | USC Schedule of Classes), does anyone know if ECON-203 will fulfill the pre-requisite for 251?

your best bet might be to contact Marshall / your adviser directly.

Thanks, but I have contacted them, about a month ago. Apparently, they didn’t get my e-mail. My advisor doesn’t know anything and therefore referred me to Marshall. E-mailed Marshall again recently to see if they’d reply. I just posted this hoping that anyone who had a similar question had gotten any feedback from them.

All business majors must take econ 251x and 252x at USC, even if you already took micro & macro econ elsewhere. You can read more about the new curriculum here: [USC Marshall Frequently Asked Questions](http://www.marshall.usc.edu/undergradprogram/advising/faq.htm)

Thanks Kulakai! I had seen that late last semester during finals but forgot how to navigate to it. Bummer…

I’m BBGG’s son and I just got into the business school this semester. The first set of classes you listed are part of the old curriculum and the second set is the new curriculum, and as a transfer into Marshall or a student in Marshall, you have the choice of which curriculum you would like to follow. Having said that, no, ECON-203 will not fulfill the prerequisite for 251, as ECON-203 is either macro or micro (I can’t remember) and 251 is something entirely different. Anyways, although you may not have all the prerequisites Marshall says you need to get into their school, you should still apply even though Marshall says they are required for you to transfer. I myself applied to Marshall this semester without having taken Statistics (MATH 218), but I still got in because of an A in MATH 118 and a high GPA. So, essentially, if your track record looks good, Marshall will assume you will do well in these classes regardless of if you have not taken them yet and may still admit you. Anyways, good luck.

Thanks for the information! I didn’t know that was possible. Did you transfer from another university into Marshall or were you a current student transferring into Marshall?

ECON-203 and 251 are micro, but I suppose 251 is the intermediate version whereas 203 is just introductory, but in the soc they’re listed as duplicate credit which confused me.

i was an in house transfer from CLAS.

And just to ‘officially’ verify what bbgg said about Math-218 for anyone else, this is the response from my query about pre-requisites:

“Because of these factors, it may be easier for you to follow the ‘old’ curriculum and complete the prerequisite courses as follows: WRIT 140, ECON 203, ECON 205, MATH 118 and/or MATH 218 B**.”

So I guess I’ll stick with the ‘old!’
