First of all, I can not believe that my daughter will be a Senior next year! I think I began posting on CC nearly 4 years ago! Where does the time go? Secondly, ND has been an absolutely amazing experience for her! It is in every way the special place we thought it would be...

Now onto the next phase~she is a SCPP major with intentions for med. school. She took the MCAT last month and hasn't gotten the results yet, but felt the test was extremely tough. Do any of you have any experience with applying to med schools from ND? I hear that most are fairly favorable and understand the lack of grade inflation etc. I'd love to hear anything anyone has to share on this topic...gpa and test scores needed and for where... She is most interested in staying in the Chicago area, with Northwestern and U.of I as her top choices.

Again, thanks and wow, enjoy this fleeting Notre Dame time with your kids...it is over way too fast~

Irishcali:
I had posted this question earlier on Premed… I would like your opinion.

My D has received a good fa package to Saint Louis University…and has been admitted into the Medical Scholar Program (which is a direct path to SLU Med School (depending on MCAT) beginning in her Junior year. .Plus other honors…BUT she has also been admitted to Notre Dame… with great, high honors (still waiting for fa package). She loves both schools and is wanting the Catholic feel. The distance away from home is SLU 1/4 the distance than ND. … For many years she has wanted to be in the medical field, but… only a small percent of students actually continue on to medical school, many change majors etc.
I would like to have opinions on which university would be the most beneficial. In 2005, 17 Notre Dame graduates actually went to SLU for Medical School, which is a high number compared to the admittance into the other graduate med schools (Georgetown was actually the highest with, I think, 24) But… if a change in major… would SLU or ND be more beneficial? She is will be entering as a freshman… with a Biology major in mind. Thanks for any advice.

Oh! I totally understand your dilemma in more ways than you know! My daughter was also accepted into SLU’s med scholar’s program, but chose ND…Now to complicate it more, my son is currently a freshman at SLU! So, I understand both schools well…

The med scholars program at SLU is great, without a doubt…the knowledge that with good grades and a decent MCAT score you are set for med school is wonderful. SLU is a nice school with really nice kids, but there are also a lot of kids that are not that serious…I hate to say that, but if you daughter is a serious student (which she must be given her honors) I think she might feel a little out of place… I really hate to say that since my son is very happy at SLU but sometimes feels the lack of dedication on other kids’ parts. (as a note, my son is not a med scholar, but is majoring in education and public service-dean’s list however and takes it seriously) At ND all the kids study…really they really do. It is looked at strangely if you are not. So, for my daughter, it has been perfect. Hopefully she will get into a med school of her choice as well!

On another note~you really have to also consider that your daughter might change her mind! Mine didn’t, but SO many of her friends that started in Pre-med etc. have changed. Others are pursuing alternate plans. The statistics say that most will change their minds, so in the end if the med scholar program is the main reason for SLU, then I would choose ND.

Feel free to PM me if you have any other questions!
Good luck to your daughter!
She has great options!

Irishcali,
I have PM’d you… I am new at this CC, I had to break it up because my text was so long… But when I tried to send the first part of the message, I got an error message that you did not have enough storage space… I am sorry to be so confusing. I think you’ll understand what I am trying to get across when you read the message. I still have a portion to send…
