@JBStillFlying you mentioned something about hearing from CMU in March. On their website it says decisions are released on April 15. Which seems kind of late. Did you hear March from the school? I’ll have to check with S too.
@MA2012 - my D received this e-mail when she submitted her application:
“Thank you for submitting a Regular Decision application for admission to Carnegie Mellon for fall 2017. The Office of Admission will work hard to notify you of an admission decision by late March.”
Pretty sure the regular pool heard back around March 24(?) last year, though I could be misremembering.
The website says by no later than April but I’m pretty sure the daughter of some friends of ours who is now a junior also heard back in March. Let’s hope they make that goal because mid-April just seems way too late!
@JBStillFlying thanks. I didn’t ask S about an email yet. He has some friends who are freshmen at CMU but I don’t remember who heard what when (other then MIT is Pi day, Cal Tech is the day before, and a lot of schools are March 31/April 1).
@binky17 That’s a good question to which I don’t know the answer. The one thing I noticed with Northeastern is they say “up to a $30K a year scholarship.” You may want to call and ask them if there is a minimum amount they award to see how low that minimum might be.
I followed the 2015 NMF thread to learn more about the process. There was a lot of humor n that thread that lightened the stress of the long wait period from the start of the process to the end. I haven’t been following this thread- so I am not sure if this has already been posted. So this might be a repeat, but it is always worthy of a second reading.
From @GoAskDad, posted 2/8/15:
We now come to a Critical Juncture in the thread.
After 14 months of waiting - first to see if my DS made our state NMSF cut-off, and then more waiting still…to see if he makes NMF - it has come down to this: I’ve written a Country Song.
Despite living in Kansas, I don’t actually listen to country music. Nevertheless, it seems only a Country Song will do under the circumstances.
And my agonizing, fruitless wait today inspired its lyrics.
So I dedicate this song to everyone following along in the NMSC Breakroom this week, especially Jimmie the Intern - whose now-legendary status on CC has forced him into seclusion with Brian Williams. (Sorry about that, Jimmie.)
Jimmie, Why Ya Keep Me Waitin’?
by GoAskDad
Jiiimmmie….
I got a lil’ somethin’ to telllll yaaa…
I heeeear….
That you’re a pretty sensitive felllllaaa…
See, I’ve been nibblin’ Candy Hearts,
And Chocolate Hearts, too.
I know it’s Stress-Eatin’,
But what’s a Mom to do?
You’ve got some news for me….
‘Bout College bein’ “FREE,”
But you’re keepin’ it a secret….
So that just makes me eat!
Oooo, Jiiimmmie….
Why ya keep me waaaaaitin’?!
Oooo, Jiiimmmie….
Don’tcha know my tummy’s aaaaachin’?
You’re the intern with the key,
To set this Momma free,
But you gave it to a BIRD,
So I haven’t gotten word.
Your pigeon must be lost,
But that bird has got my mail,
And all I wanna know….
Is the ending to this tale!
Oooo, Jiiimmmie….
Why ya keep me waaaaaitin’?!
Oooo, Jiiimmmie….
This ain’t a game we’re plaaaaayin’!
I know you wanna call,
Or be sendin’ me a text.
I know you wanna email,
To say what’s comin’ next!
So stand right up to Stan,
And the others in the group!
You gotta give me Mercy,
Cuz I’m waitin’ for this news!
Oooo, Jiiimmmie….
Why ya keep me waaaaaitin’?!
Oooo, Jiiimmmie….
Can’t you see my heart’s ‘a breaaaaakin’?
Oooo, Jiiimmmie….
Why ya keep me waaaaaitin’?!
Oooo, Jiiimmmie….
Can’t you see that pigeon’s faiiiiilin’?
Oooo, Jiiimmmie….
Why ya keep me waaaaaitin’?…
Oooo, Jiiimmmie….
Thank you @momofsmartdancer. I enjoyed it!
I have now officially come in to read “Jimmy the Intern” at least five times and have laughed every time. Thank you @momofsmartdancer for posting. And a huge shout-out to the comedic, insightful lyrics penned by @GoaskDad !
@GoaskDad is wonderful. She is in some ways responsible for my cabana boy avatar. It was so great to have her along on the Parents of the Class of 2015 thread.
College admissions and scholarship-seeking are a grand and agonizing assortative-mating dance. Those who have not yet received a letter, we have officially reached the two-week milestone. That’s how long the guy at NMSC told me to wait to be sure mail wasn’t arriving. Most of us probably won’t really breathe until positive notification comes in, but I find that whether news is good as now expected or bad, I’m not really thinking much about it anymore despite plenty of money on the line. It’s strange. Maybe it’s a form of burnout. They really ought to switch to electronic notification.
@MatzoBall I feel the same. I’m kinda burned out thinking about it so it doesn’t really cross my mind anymore.
@curiouscat319 - As a fellow Floridian whose D has the Benaquiato, I am quietly pulling for you.
@MatzoBall Me too! I am prone to performing rituals…like checking this site twice (or more) a day, but I really am not super nervous at this point. I can wait a few days for the final word if need be,
Sorry I’m kind of posting late, but I received my rejection letter a week ago citing low November SAT scores. I knew that a 1380/205 probably wasn’t going to make it. Even though I didn’t achieve Finalist status, I’m grateful for the national merit experience.
@MSBlues Congratulations…becoming NMSF is a fantastic accomplishment and you should be extremely proud of that. I wish you the best of luck in your college experience. Again, Congratulations on being NMSF.
Thank you for letting us know, @MSBlues. I am very sorry that you didn’t make it. Good luck to you.
@MSBlues Thank you for the update. Super bummed for you, but if you made SF you are going to be just fine in the long run. My D also got a 1380 (Oct?) but was not feeling well. I made her re-take it in December and she did much better the second time. She was not very happy with me, but I was too worried it would be too iffy. Now I am super sad that I was right. It is crazy how much one single test means. Ugh. Good luck…and be proud of your great accomplishment.
@MSBlues thank you for sharing!
What are the odds of calling NMSC tomorrow and being told about Finalist status? Since the letters to schools go out tomorrow.
Do the schools receive physical letters tomorrow or is it just mailed out from NMSC tomorrow. And is it possible they call/email the schools tomorrow to notify who makes finalist?
@nutmeg_shippy You could give it a shot. Worst that can happen is they don’t tell you.
@curiouscat319 As far as we know, the letters are mailed tomorrow and then mailed to the finalist’s home address next Monday. I haven’t heard of any calls/ emails to schools to announce finalists in previous years.
