The letters are mailed tomorrow. The schools should start receiving them Wednesday I’d guess. I’m hoping my sons school lets the kids know before the letter to the homes gets sent the following week.
@nutmeg_shippy I don’t think you should call NM. It might be difficult for them if a lot of applicants did that. They chose the way they wanted to notify us, and we should abide by that choice and just wait it out. It must be a lot of work to read through all the applications and make the decisions about finalists, and still more work to sort out who is eligible for each type of scholarship and make those decisions. We don’t want to create any problems or annoy them. However, I think it would be ok to ask your guidance counselor if he or she is willing to share the information when it arrives at the school.
@MSBlues I really appreciate your update though the news wasn’t what you wanted. Congratulations on being included in the NMSF…a huge accomplishment that you should be very proud of!
Well…today is the day that NMC mails out the Finalist letters to the school. I am just relieve that we have gotten this far in the journey. Hopefully we move on just feeling blessed that we made it this far. Good luck to everyone…please let us know when you start getting notice from the schools.
I apologize for adding to the confusion, but are the letters mailed out to schools today or are the schools notified today? I’ve seen conflicting info on this thread and I wanted to see if there was one agreed-upon answer.
I think that this is the best info that has been posted. The way it is worded it sounds like letters are mailed. I know…get with the information age!

According to the folks at NMC, the letters with certificates go out in snail mail (USPS) today. It depends on location in the states when your school will receive them.
Can’t believe today is finally the day that letters go out! What a ride it has been since sitting for the PSAT October of 2015. Good luck to everyone here!
We need to re-title this thread, or move everyone over to this one: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/national-merit-scholarships/1960106-2017-national-merit-finalist-thread.html#latest. Just a thought. Come on USPS!
@nutmeg_shippy - longer than that - D17 started prepping with Kahn Academy in early August 2015. It’s been 18 months!
@JBStillFlying ^^^ now I am pulling for her!
@tx151, not sure why we have to move the outcome to another thread. Is there a CC rule?
I ask due to learning so much from previous years posters, and following the one thread from beginning to decisions released has been such a help (and in some instances, a real hoot! GoaskDad☺).
Good Luck everyone, and thank you all for sharing.
@MomofAlex1 no, not at all. Just a thought I had. That’s it. We’ve had the no-news-is-good-news discussion. It’s getting pretty long and full of posts about rejection letters, and worries about rejection letters. Someone started a fresh discussion about people becoming Finalists, and I thought it would be nice to move the discussion there. I have absolutely no say in the matter whatsoever. I will probably continue following both discussions to see if more good info shows up in either.
Good luck to you and yours!
has anyone gotten a positive letter?
I thought positive (NMF) letters do not go out to the students until next week?
@saillakeerie, the schools are supposed to receive the letter this week (mailed on Feb. 6). The kids/parents receive them next week (mailed on Feb 13). Home schooled parents/principals should receive letters this week.

@slaudsmom Congratulations!!!
My daughter got her official certificate from her school today in Florida!
My D17’s school found out today that she’s a finalist. Congrats to all and good luck to those still waiting - it won’t be long now!
Edit to add: MN
