The no-news-is-good-news NMF rejection/acceptance/worry thread, Class of 2018

Wow @okeydokeypokey, that is lame! My son’s “presentation” was just slightly better, but not by much. Piece of advice - don’t look on Twitter, lol! Looked before my son got his certificate to see what people were saying about receiving notice, and gee, some schools do this right: flowers, banners, even a parade (students lining the hall while the kid was driven through the school on a decorated golf cart). I don’t think my son wanted that, but basically the guidance counselor just gave it to them and said congrats; principal was nowhere to be seen.

@moosiechica88 I am pretty sure Liberty University in Virginia has a big NMF scholarship, and other Christian schools do too.

Good news from Yukon, Oklahoma. Our DD got her certificate today!
She had a C on her second semester of Algebra 1 on 9th grade. She also has two B’s in other subjects that same year.
After that, her GPA went up significantly. Her SAT score was 1470 and her Math score was either 730 or 740. I just want to encourage everyone in this forum that if you didn’t get a rejection letter already, your your son or daughter will soon get a certificate also.

GC just emailed me, and S is NMF!!! throws confetti

Congrats to everyone who made it, and hang in there to those still waiting.

We’re in SoCal for those keeping track geographically.

It’s lost a lot of its luster as now it’s claimed to be a result of socioeconomics and a result of privilege - there’s a whole page on CC with the liberal elite academics complaining it’s unfair and not reflective of future performance

My daughter got called to office to get her certificate today here in NC. She’s pretty nonplused by the whole thing, but I’m super proud. No hoopla at school today, but I think she’ll get announced during Senior Awards day and perhaps in the commencement program. Congrats to all and good luck on the next step in the journey. And, remind your kids college is what you make of it, not where you go!

there were 43 NMSF at my son’s HS. this is a typical number each year so i’m assuming they won’t make a big deal out of it.

@kevbostic – 43!!! Wow! I think there were 6 or 7 at my daughter’s school, lol. Tho it’s small – 800ish students. What type of school does he attend and how big is it?

@AlmostThere2018 his school total is about 2,700 and about 700 graduating seniors. i saw somewhere (was it here on CC?) that there was a school with only around 200 graduating seniors with about the same number of NMSF! 8-0

There is a private school in Indianapolis where nearly 10% of the 2018 senior class were NMSF. They had 11 NMSF.

No news again in East Texas

“It’s lost a lot of its luster as now it’s claimed to be a result of socioeconomics and a result of privilege - there’s a whole page on CC with the liberal elite academics complaining it’s unfair and not reflective of future performance.”

Making NMF is the result of hard work. The high PSAT score will get you to SF but is pretty much a nothing from there w/o grades and leadership/EC’s/part time work to back it up.

For a lot of kids who miss the cut-off by a point or two because they live in a high-scoring state . . probably for them it’s NOT reflective of their future performance. For the bright kids who either goofed off in HS or had problems, they will likely be fine as well as long as they can get it together during their college years.

Colleges look closely at unweighted GPA and course rigor. That doesn’t mean SAT/ACT scores aren’t important - they most certainly are. But a high scoring kid who lacks self-discipline will wash out in college and the best signal of self-discipline is to take the hardest load you can and do your best with it. Last time I checked, that was still rewarded - not only by NMSC, but by the colleges themselves.

Our school is public, not a magnet, the only high school in the district, but known as a “good school” and I think we had 26 NMF out of a class 647. Looking at past years I think they usually average around 27-28. DS20 class is much larger, 714, so I suspect more NMF’s in his class.

Snow day (ice, actually) here in Northeast PA, so no news.

Finalist in PA. School received the mail just Today, my son was in the office when the mail arrived. Maybe they are sending these in batches.

I’m kind of sick of “It only shows you’re a good test taker”. Well, last I checked, most colleges are pretty much three tests and a final so I guess that isn’t such a bad thing even if it IS true. Smh

@kevbostic Wow that’s crazy! There are 405 seniors in my class and only 4 NMSFs. I guess that’s Idaho public schools for ya.

Nothing here in Greater Boston - anyone from Massachusetts hear?

Those are some pretty big numbers for NMF! At my school, we have about 700 seniors and I am the only NMF/NMSF. We had about 8 commended. I think one of the things my school could work on is educating underclassmen about the importance of the PSAT. Some think it is just the $2500 scholarship, most don’t know anything about the scholarship program. The district pays for the Sophomores’ tests but not the Juniors. this could be a good way to see who could potentially be a NMSF and give support, but they don’t do that.

I am just so grateful for this community!! If it weren’t for CC, I would not have found out about this wonderful opportunity. Thank you guys for being so supportive and helpful! I know you/your child will be successful wherever you/they decide to go! :x

Sigh. No news here. DS had to send off a pretty big scholarship app today without NMF listed. He did go to the office and nobody knew anything. Counseling didn’t, either. It’s unfortunate, because other students competing for the same scholarship will quite possibly know their status and list it on their apps. DS made a note about “Finalist status unknown” or something, but it doesn’t seem very fair.

Having said that, I’ll just be grateful if he gets the designation. We’ve had much smoother sailing this time around than we did with DS Class of 2015. Still, it would be nice to have the entire thing be completely uneventful! There really should be a same-day announcement of all Finalists, so as not to create an uneven playing field during the exact time when many scholarship apps are due.

Finally, in light of today’s tragic news at a FL high school, I wondered about posting here at all. Even though NMF matters to many of our DCs and us, there are parents just like us living their worst nightmares right now. It is hard to comprehend.
