The Official Chances Thread!

Im wondering if I just wasted 60 bucks...
Im an OOS
32 act (36 Math, 35 sci, 28 english(25 with essay), 28 Reading)
Sat II Math 2 : 780
Sat II Physics: 730
I have bad scores on SAT so I wont post them but hopefully that will change on saturday.
very low gpa but has been increasing every semester
my first year gpa was just over 1
my second year gpa was just over 2
my third year gpd was 3.5
and right now I have a 4.0

very low class rank(think bottom half)

Activities:
wrestling freshman and junior year
40 hour a week job

I have(or have had) the following AP's
Calc BC: 5
Physics : 5
Computer Science: 5
Government & Politics: 4
Comparitive Government: 3 (I thought my class would prepare me for this, I was wrong)
Stats: In progress
Chem: In progress
Psych: In progress

BTW I'm a Caucasian male who applied for the EECS program so that probably doesn't help me any.

Gebrselassie: it'd be worth applying. Applying OOS and to a competitive major will make it very difficult, though you do have a good shot.

hfkjds: if your GPA is that low and you're OOS, it's probably a big reach, though an upward trend is very good. You might get a request for a midyear report as a result, so you might want to be prepared for that. I'd say you have a shot, but it's most likely a reach, since the only really strong part of your application is your scores, and since you're applying to a very competitive major.

In State

SAT: 2270(800 Math)

Weighted GPA: 4.4(for 10th and 11th grade) 4.5 counting Senior year (assuming straight a's)

Unweighted: 3.88

UC GPA: 4.21

Class Rank: Very competitive high school in CA(API>900), but am somewhere between top 5-8 percent.

Math 2c: 800
Physics: expecting 800 or very close to 800

EC'S

1)Cross Country Varsity Captain
2)Track-Captain
3)Received awards and got many of my poems published.
4)Won several piano competitions- I have been playing for 7 years
5)Tutor for a local SAT prep company teaching math and science
6)Peer tutor at school for all the math and science classes
7)Speech and Debate- I did it freshman and soph. year. I won a few tournaments
8)Robotics
9) 150 hrs of Community Service- at YMCA and peer tutoring

Essays:
Very strong. I enjoy writing, and my essays will definitely boost my application.

Intended Major: EECS (in state applicant)

I'm gonna repost this with my updated stats and with the activities removed that I didn't put on my application.

Anyone know my chances of getting into USC, UCLA, UCSB, UC Davis, Loyola-Marymount

Any tips or random pieces of advice appreciated

Applicant55, your low GPA and OOS kills you in UCLA and Cal. USC is a reach/slight reach too I'd say.

compSciBeast: your GPA and scores are strong. Your ECs are slightly weak, though your honors/awards are good. Since you're applying to a competitive major, I'd say slight reach (50-50), though it'll depend more on your essays. Did you discuss your interest in EE/CS in them? That's very important. If you didn't, then it's a reach.

iPhone: your GPA and SAT are very good. Your ECs don't particularly distinguish you, but your honors/awards are strong. Since you're OOS, it's probably a reach, though you do have a shot.

No Quarter: it's a bit too early to tell for you. Your GPA seems fine, and your SATs are strong (you don't need to retake the SAT I). Your chances will depend on your ECs/awards and essays. You seem to be on the right track, though.

Applicant55: Since you're OOS with a GPA quite a bit below the average, I'd say Berkeley's a big reach (~10%). With really awesome essays, you might have a better shot.

OOS white Male, math major

UC GPA- 4.09

SAT - 2140 (780M, 600R, 760W)
ACT - 33
SAT II- 750 Math II, 750 Biology M, 750 Math I

Taken 3 APs already...

Calculus AB- 5
Biology- 5

Taking 3 more now...

One essay was very very good, the other was decent.

hopeful5: your GPA is somewhat weak for an OOSer, though your SAT is good, as are your ECs. However, given that you're an OOSer, I'd say it's a reach. With really great essays, you might have a better shot.

ha yea sorry...i didnt know how to calculate UC gpa before so my gpa looked even lower then

uhh, HS Junior here so my GPA is what I am aiming for, and I'm not sure about SAT II's.

Fresh/Soph = 4.0, no AP classes
Junior semesters = 4.5-4.8 depending on what classes I get A's in
Senior = 4.5-4.8

Which gives me an overall goal of a 4.17-4.3 weighted gpa i think (as a goal).

SAT I: 2110 (660 CR, 780 M, 670 WR)
SAT II: Aiming for 800 math, and some other subject in the high 700s.

EC's
Year round swim team.
Varsity swimming since Sophomore year.
-I probably have more stuff, but nothing like "honors" or "awards", I'll have to think of other stuff to write about, like my hobbies maybe?

Tips or advice? Thanks in advance.

tkd2009: I'm assuming you're in-state. Your GPA is your strongest point, and your SAT is good (though a little lopsided). Your ECs, though, are a bit weak. If you were a senior, I would say a reach (about 30%), but since you have a year ahead of you, you can improve on much.

First, junior year is the time to become more involved. I would suggest you find an interest and follow it, in school and out of school. This could be doing activities in organizations or on your own. Seek out leadership positions, but only if you feel that that's your type of personality.

If you feel that your honors/awards category will be a bit lonely, don't worry; I did too at that time, but by the time I filled out the application, I not only filled the section with my awards, but had to go to the additional comments. As you can see, junior year is important in many respects -- your scores, your grades, your ECs, your honors/awards. You amass quite a bit in that year (at least I did). Seek them out, if you'd like, though many of your ECs will bring them in. Once you've found an interest, try finding a competition for it -- there most likely is one! Writing contests are abundant if that's your thing. If your school has Boys' State, try for that -- if they don't, get some relations going. Very important, also, is to apply to scholarships. Many are designed for people your age/grade. Try them out -- you just might get them.

Most importantly, though, do the above for what you want, not just to pad your resume. Good luck. =)

If you could chance me at Cal Poly (CA State), UCD, UCSB, UCI, UCSD, UCLA, and USC, that'd be great! Thanks.

kyledavid80, thanks for the response
I am reading some of these posts on these forums and a lot of the EC's are in organizations and whatnot, but most of what I like is pretty solo.

Mountain biking, road biking
Photography
learning guitar, played piano for 5 years...

I should probably try to up my SAT score, but which would be more important to focus on, aiming for 2200 or EC's?

ECs, definitely. Your SAT could stay where it is and your chances would still be good. I simply said that because you could bring up your CR and W scores since you have a year.

rainauraash: good GPA, somewhat weak scores, good ECs and honors/awards. I'd say slight reach (50-50), high match with good essays.

Hi guys! Sorry I've been busy with studies, I need to catch up on this thread.

Applicant55: sorry your GPA is low for the schools you're aiming for, especially out of state. You might have a chance at LMU but I don't see it for the others.

hopeful5: your GPA and SAT is decent, but being OOS makes it harder for you. I'm guessing 30-40% chance. ECs are good.

tkd2009: I don't know how you could get a 4.8 unless your school uses some wacky weighted system or you're taking all APs and they all count for 5.0? Anyway, assuming 4.0 means you've gotten straight A's so far, you have a good GPA and SAT score is decent. ECs is really lacking though...join a few clubs or try out leadership or something. Maybe some community service might help. Right now I'm gonna say 50-60%.

cliffdive: your SAT I and II scores will hurt you a lot, they are definitely below average for Berkeley. I'm thinking 10% for Berkeley, 15% for UCLA or USC, 25% for UCSD, 40% for UCD/UCI/SLO.

Btw, you don't want to be that guy. You should aim for a school that fits you and helps you learn, not a school that goes too fast for you to keep up. Which college you go to is overhyped in high school.

rainauraash: your GPA is decent, with that rank I'm guessing you go to a tough high school. Your SAT is a little below average. You have a lot of solid ECs. Geez, I feel like I'm repeating kyledavid. Anyway, 50-60% chance.

Photography Club- one year
Asian Club- One year
French club- One year, secretary

these won't count and might even hurt you.
