The *Official* Lets Get Healthy Thread

I'm looking to lose around 10 lbs by September. So... a bit more than a pound a month.

I've hovered around 115lbs at 5'3" for as long as I can remember. I'm reasonably skinny (a pair of C-cup breasts weights along the order of 10 pounds... That's your fun fact of the day...), but I am not very healthy at the moment. As a child, I figure skated 3 hours a day, 4 days a week, which meant that I was in extremely good shape. Once I moved to Missouri and started high school, however, I no longer had time. I still weigh about the same, but all my muscle has atrophied.

So this summer I started weight training and such, lost about 5 pounds, fell off track, and gained that weight back. Now I am running 3 miles on the treadmill 5 days a week and will start skating once a week again, as well as improving my diet and taking vitamins. Hopefully I can drop that weight permanently by the time college rolls around in fall.

Cs weigh 10 pounds? Is that true? Excellent. You don't know how happy that makes me :)
Also, good to see another skinny short girl with a big chest! I knew there were others out there.

^ wow, that means that I would be like 5'7 110 lbs flat chested... damn the boobies!

I used to have problems with my weight (not overweight at all, just with my confidence about my weight).

I think the first thing all of you who say you "need/want to lose [insert number here] pounds]" is step back and look at why you want to do this--are you really overweight and want to save your health, or do you just want to look skinny? Unless you have a beneficial goal (versus one that simply conforms to societal expectations) you won't get anywhere.

That being said, here are some tips that you may or may not have heard:

Cut out enriched/hydrogenated products--read food labels, buy unbleached flour or whole grain products, and avoid anything with high fructose corn syrup. It will make you look and feel better, since you won't be injecting artificial hormones into your body.

Avoid Emotional Eating--an idea is to keep a food journal, recording not only what you eat but when and why. If you're eating when you're bored or stressed, find a new outlet. Go for a walk or run, whatever moves you; just get away from food and eat when you're hungry.

Don't Completely Restrict Yourself--an extreme diet never lasts. Enough said. Just eat healthy products and exercise, but let yourself indulge at least once a week.

Work Out to Relieve Stress--find something you enjoy doing and that makes you happy. Then it won't be a problem keeping it up.

Surprisingly, right now I'm only 100 lbs. which is about what I was last year, but I'm seeing more fat on me, so I'm going to join in on this thread. Somehow all this fat is building up in areas...maybe the reason I'm not gaining weight is because I'm losing muscle. I need to work on toning my core...do crunches work well?

geez, loh, how tall are you?? please say like 4'10" or something...

lol not 4'10"...most people who are 4'10" only weigh like 80-90 lbs (unless they are adults, of course). Then I'd definitely need to lose weight.

I'm 5'2"...it's not so much a matter of losing weight. Part of being healthy is being more toned and muscular and in better physical shape and make better life choices, etc.

heeey, careful loh. haha, I'm 4'11" and I weigh 95-100.

For whatever reason I always thought you were a guy...strange. :/

Yeah a lot of people pressume that Im a guy..

I really think that being healthy is important, but being healthy definately doesn't mean you should be a twig. I think that it's really easy to stay healthy. Just find a workout you like, it doesnt even have to be going to the gym--it can be dancing or something like that, and do it at least 3 times a week. Maybe with some weights here and there, or if you don't like that do yoga or pilates, they basically have the same affect. Also, eat what you want, but in moderation, of course. This whole calorie restriction thing that I see girls on is the biggest load of crock i've ever heard. If you've taken chemistry you know that a calorie is energy and you kind of need that to work out or even to function normally. Also, i definately agree with the whole "don't eat when you're upset" idea. Find something else to do. I'm lucky, when I get stressed out, all I want to do is work out, so that helps me. Anyways, thats my two cents. Good luck everyone!

heres a huge tip i just learned yesterday, wen u get home, have a one dinner. then if u get hungery again, drink a huge bottle of water instead. IT WORKS, trust me.

I went running today. I don't know if it's endorphins or what, but I feel amazing after I run. I think running is the perfect solution to one not-so-good test grade.

Yeah...emotional eating is bad. I don't think you should restrict yourself totally though, with anything. My rule is generally no eating after 9 PM though.

Some of you guys are nuts...

Try using sprints/running as punishment. :) I play a lot of sports, seven days a week, but I DON'T enjoy running long distances for no reason. So, say someone offers me something dripping in chocolate or sugar. Just ask yourself: is this piece of food worth, say, 1 mile after school today? If it is, then chow down, run later, and sleep happily. If not, no harm done., and you don't have to do that extra bit of running. A big key is keeping everything balanced. You certainly need to eat enough to sustain yourself and have energy for exercising, but not so much that exercise doesn't burn everything off. And keep in mind, too- lifting weights builds muscle, which does burn fat but also adds weight. So just lifting weights isn't going to be enough, most likely. Oh, and one more thing- don't let your weight decieve you. If you are an athlete or even just someone with "big bones" (which does not equal fat!), you can easily weigh 20 pounds more than someone else your own height and look just as "skinny". Plus being much healthier. :)

I just wanted to say that I'm really glad that I started this thread, and that I have definitely learned a lot from the different posters.

It has been 3 weeks since I started this thread and I have lost a total of 5 pounds. It's amazing what such little weight can do for your confidence adn appearance. I've been eating right and working out, and my weight has slowly been dropping.

Thanks a lot everyone!

Hey, congrats surfette! That's great news!

I've just been getting unhealthier, on account of finals, then going on vacation. So like, 2 weeks of no exercise, eating out at restaurants, and lots of holiday food. But once I get home in 4 days I'm determined to get on track!

I've been eating out everyday! I hate it. I rarely eat out and I abhor fast food...that's just the way I am, you know? Lately, my friends and I have been spedning a lot of time together because during school we're all off in our diff directions you know? So not good for me

Exactly, Aspen D! The more time I spend with friends, the more fast food/junk food I eat. A lot of our gatherings sort of center around food.

As if what I said before needs emphasis, today I hung out with my best friend. Ended up eating out (again) and then eating ice cream afterwards and falling asleep in front of the TV.
ha.
I've gained 10 pounds since November. Neat.
