YOU ARE CORRECT. I don’t know why the TI-89 doesn’t give 20.219 and 15.410 as possible answers, but they DO work. There are indeed 6 positive x’s for which the graphs intersect.</p>

Since when x=a-1, the y is -1 (because you’re given that f(a-1)=-1). The function has a period of 3, which means that if you move 3 to the right (ie x= a-1+3 = a+2), you’ll have the same y value (ie -1). So f(a+2)=-1. The facts that f(a)=0 and f(a+1)=1 were irrelevant.</p>
