The Official Pakistani Thread for the Class of 2014

@Inert101: I love your minimum SAT requirement!! Wouldn’t that be amazing?

(By the way, before anyone makes this an argument, I’m not being serious!)

This science inclination is interesting. I, however, am deciding between Poli Sci, French and History- just because Pakistanis are good at science and math doesn’t mean they have to pursue it!

Also, one more reason why it’s hard for internationals to get in: US universities exist primarily to cater to US students, and US students are still the main group being recruited and accepted. Internationals are a small fraction of college students there because the infrastructure is mainly designed to educate Americans, just like Pakistani schools are mainly filled with Pakistanis. And this isn’t a public or private thing, just generally. And Dark_Angrl is right about the aid, of course. (But read the article linked in the Princeton section on an amazing exception)

About the science and engineering thing: Well personally I want to become an electronic engineer because I fell in love with electronics as early as eight grade. It only helped that I really enjoyed exploring physics, mathematics and computing both inside and outside school (and kinda did well in those areas :P).

For most Pakistani students, however, it is not a decision made on passion. Its mostly parental pressure or the need to secure a “respectable” job that drives students to become engineers. I have been in touch with some students in Pakistani engineering universities and man do they have not even the SLIGHTEST love for engineering or appreciation of the finer concepts of physics and mathematics!! In my opinion, that’s the primary reason Pakistani engineers mostly do what in developed countries would be the jobs of “engineering technicians.”

The Duke of Albany is here!

Yeah, so what Lord Ecthelion is here too!!!:D

Welcome m’fellows.

Rooting for the class of 2014 from Pakistan!

Go Pakistan go!!!

Well I think 2370 is a very reasonable minimum requirement, and I am being completely serious.

Anyway, I think Pakistanis prefer engineering/sciences because for most of us English is not our first language.

Also, I think I read somewhere that India, Pakistan, and China are the most competitive regions for international admissions because they have a ridiculously high number of applicants to top schools. Besides, most schools don’t have need-blind admissions, and the US government specially gives money to universities in order to provide scholarships to US students, so internationals are left out.

Oh, and 800 should be the minimum for SAT IIs.

Inert, I can see your point. It will make the job of admission officials a lot easier for sure!

Interestingly MANY MANY of US applicants are rejected despite 2400 SAT score ( 4.0 GPA, stunning ecs etc) but I don’t know many international students getting a score that high. I think it is a big thing in Pak if you mange to get above 2200 in SAT 1 although it is true that most people do very well in SAT 2.

Im sorry but theres more to people than numbers, you cant discard somebody cause hes doesnt have a 2370 on his SAT thats freakin ridiculous. Theres a reason why colleges dont do that, they want some diversity not only kids who study all day.

Also I don’t know why some international students get so worked up about the perceived difficulty of getting into American universites with aid. I mean, as some of you guys said as well, these universities are funded by American tax payers’ money and if not by that then millions and billions in donations from generous alumni and other Americans. They have very good reasons to be very selective about who they give their money to…

Yes Faraz. That is why we have a holistic admission approach in the states. Universities here look at a wide range of factors and are never swayed by just one thing.

Most British universities, on the other hand, are convinced just by grades. And getting 3As is more than good enough for the overwhelming majority of universities there.

CONGRATS EVERYONE!!!

One more thing, if 2370 was a requirement (and an absurdly exact one at that) there wouldn’t be enough students to fill the Ivy League. That would create a bit of a problem.

Actually UK universities don’t really make their decisions based purely on grades. I have a friend with 7 A-grades (in one sitting!) at A-Level including Further Mathematics, by far the toughest A-Level, who got rejected by Oxford. Although Oxbridge do still make their decisions on purely academic bases, that goes much deeper than your grades.

I actually agree with the way British universities decide who they take. The primary purpose of a university is to educate its pupils, so it’s not exactly outrageous for a university to take in students based on their academic potential. The UK personal statement is a million times better than the US essays because it is what it should be: a formal statement of why you wish to pursue the course you have applied for. US unis expect you to go soul-searching to write applications.

I think by trying to dictate what students should do on their own time US universities are trying to play God. It is so sad to see so many students becoming clones of each other, doing hours of community service and extracurriculars not because they want to but because US unis want them to.

Also, British universities can be more confident giving grades importance in their decisions as the A-Levels are comprehensive examinations composed of hours of testing including comprehensive written examinations, practical examinations and year-long coursework projects, unlike the SATs which are simply MCQ papers.

@INERT101: Can you tell us how you arrived at this 2370 as the minimum that any college should have for its admissions. This seems somewhat arbitrary and completely ridiculous. Keeping this in context, i feel highly uncomfortable with the fact that you too have 2370 in SAT1. Why not make it 2380? That would be much better.
Its only 10 points higher so you shouldn’t really have any problem with it. :D:D

A request for everyone.

Kindly plz HIGHLIGHT the changes you make to the acceptance/conditional offer list.

And plz copy-paste the most recent list when adding ones of your own. Because I remember adding Oberlin and NYU to the list yesterday, but now they are mysteriously missing.

It has happened to my UCLA addition before and I had to add it again.

Thanks :)
