The Official UCB Fall of 2014 Decisions Thread

@toepump have you considered taking your prereqs this summer but at a cc? Might be more manageable

@CompSciUCTrnsfr‌ Hey bud :wink: I got the EE40 equivalent hahaha jk I’m in an intro circuits class learning the same stuff as in EE40 but at a slow pace (unfortunately). Your chances aren’t worse off at all! You’ll just have less experience. And bro I’m with you 100%. I got into UCLA (former dream school) and it doesn’t feel as amazing as I thought, since I’ve been set on Berkeley since I got rejected in 2012 from high school. It’s a different feeling putting all your eggs into a basket when working for that school from the beginning of your CC/UC career (if you’re a UC transfer) and the pay out isn’t as expected. Dude, just like we got into UCLA, I’m confident we got this in the bag :)

Hi, I know someone mentioned that some of the majors within the College of L&S are “grouped” together for purpose of admissions, which makes some majors harder to get in than others purely because of the other majors within the category.

Would anyone happen to know which category Anthropology falls under?

Also, does UCB have a set time on Friday for the release of their decisions like UCLA did this past Friday? Or are we going to have to just spam the page all day?!

Thanks!

Hey @music1990, if my daughter gets into Berkeley and you’re waitlisted, you might get her spot, too!

We UCLA folk are doing all you guys a mighty big favor. (@cayton) :smiley:

@chaoscuber
I know what you mean. Cal has way different prerecs from CSUs and whatnot so if I end up not going I’d have taken a bunch of useless units.

@Cayton‌
Special future changing powers huh? Then say I’ll get in. SAY I’LL GET IN!!! Or don’t. That’s cool too.

We’re all gonna make it, brah

So is Berkeley not offering regents scholarship to transfers this year?

Berkeley doesn’t waitlist…

@Reacts
Yep! Anthropology as you know, is part of the college of L&S, but the category it falls under is Social Sciences, which in 2013, had an admission rate of 26.6% for transfer students. The decision release date will be at 5pm PST, this Friday :)

You can find the link here: http://admissions.berkeley.edu/sites/default/files/docs/Transfer_Flier.pdf

I honestly think that Social Sciences is just the average of all those majors. There are a few heavily impacted major in that category; there is no way anthropology and economics have the same admit rate. At least I am hoping this is the case since I am an anthropology major lol.

Wow your name was hard to type out. Well from what I heard (I’m not 100% if I’m correct), Berkeley admits students by their college, and not by their specific major. Once you get admitted into the college, you then declare your major within that college; from some, I hear that this process actually makes admittance into the school more easier, but don’t take my word for it… It’s just something I heard.

@anxiety94, yeah, you get admitted to L&S, but I am more concerned about how they make an admissions decision. It wouldn’t seem correct to hold an anthropology major to the same standards as an economics major- which is impacted. If that was the case, there would be very few accepted anthropology majors.

@CooCooCaChoo25‌
If I had to make a wild guess (and anyone correct me here if I’m wrong), I would say that getting admitted into the school is not the difficult part, but probably declaring your major. I think they hold all initial applicants into L&S with the same standards, but what will differ in difficulty depending on the popularity of your major, is probably being accepted into your major after the fact, when you have to write the supplementary essay and apply for it. That’s where I’m assuming the impaction of the major plays a big role.

To my knowledge, applications toward L&S college are reviewed by people from the college itself but not staffs of admission office, which is different from any other colleges in Cal. If someone applies for History major, for instance, most likely there would be persons of History department to review the papers and make decisions.

@TT4UCOSBEL @CooCooCaChoo25
That’s right. I also forgot to mention that this process is only unique to the L&S college, like TT4UC mentioned.

@smashley93 I would but unfortunately none of the pre-reqs are offered at my CC over the summer…but I’ll worry about that if i’m admitted at all

@chaoscuber Thanks for the boost of confidence, I have been worrying this past week. Just contacted UCLA yesterday to let them know that I changed that course to pass/fail but hopefully it shouldn’t effect my admission since it doesn’t articulate for my major. Anyways, if you get into the EECS program are you going to do summer classes at Berkeley? and how many lower division preqs do you have left? I have CS61A and 61C, El Eng 20N and 40, and CS 70. I will definitely be taking summer classes to try to catch up for all those! I’m thinking CS61A would be a good class to take over the summer since it seems fairly straightforward and would give me a chance to get use to the school.

When we say Cal has a holistic approach to the application, how much of the PS do you think is a factor? Maybe 30-35%?

Why does everyone call is Cal? What does Cal stand for?
