LOL why would anyone do that just for the ID?

Sounds better just to be patient.

LOL why would anyone do that just for the ID?

Sounds better just to be patient.

@Loyshi

that’s so tempting ugh! if I could see my financial aid info, it would put me at ease for the next 2 dreadful weeks… :((

@ocnative
No one in their sane mind should do it JUST for the ID. Or unless you had that much money to burn… Only do it if you had already plan on doing a summer session, then this would just be an added bonus.

WOW I chose a 1 unit class and it’s still about $900 with enrollment fee and some other fees… I ain’t about that life I wish I had 1k just laying around lol guess I will just have to wait!

@wintergreeen
It’s a lot right? That’s why I’m taking 6 units, so I qualify for summer financial aid.

@wintergreeen ooh i see. if you don’t mind me asking whats you GPA? and as for IGETC, i believe so that most if not all STEM majors do not need to complete IGETC. However for majors in the college of letters and science, not sure if its all of them or not, but i think that you can use IGETC to fullfill some reading, writing, reasoning… ect requirements; either that or just take the classes themselves

@anthroflo, thanks for the info! And yeah, when I visited the campus students just generally seemed unhappy. Completely different vibe at UCLA IMO. I’m not even considering Cal anymore unless I get denied by LA and SD but admitted to Cal.

booo ucla

@Zalrons

Dude, I remember when you were nuts about Berkeley, and now you don’t even seem to care much about going to that school. Now, UCLA is your #1 if I’m not mistaken. Not that I have a problem with your preferring UCLA to Cal since I’m a big UCLA fan myself, but I must ask what changed your mind. Do you like UCLA’s campus more? It’s location? Is Cal’s campus unappealing to you?

@ocnative
Did you know that scientists have determined that UCLA is better than Berkeley? It’s true. :D

Hey Cayton! IMO, UCLA has better dorms, food, campus, weather, general location, athletics, and vibe compared to Cal. I also like the variety of anthro classes I’ve seen online so far.

The only advantages to Cal is basically the semester system and prestige. That being said, I do believe that UCB’s prestige is derived mostly from grad school programs and is therefore irrelevant when considering which UG to go to unless it’s like Haas you’re entering or something. At the UG level, with my major, I don’t think it really matters with my goals. I wasn’t impressed with Cals campus at all. The architecture is nice but it’s dirty and liberals are everywhere. Lol.

@Zalrons
I could never say Cal is a school I wouldn’t consider (unless they reject me of course) because they do have a great anthropology department, I have read some good articles written by some of their staff, the general location seems alright, and the campus itself is beautiful…

Cal has its upsides, but I don’t want to be killing myself with stress all the time and I fear that if I go to Cal that is exactly what will happen.

Did you apply for a B.A. or a B.S. in anthro (at UCLA)?

@Bookham

I applied as a chemistry major.
– 3.9 GPA (I also made Bs in math classes.)
– Took honors chemistry classes when possible (Chem 200, 201, and analytical)
– Summer research in cell biology lab
– Chemistry tutor as part of Chemistry Service Learning
– Grader for O-Chem professor

I also work part-time. I’m an older, returning student.

@Zalrons

Interesting. The prestige at Cal is hard to pass up, but in regards to the quality of its undergraduate education, it’s doubtful that it’s better than UCLA.

UCLA does seem to have a better variety of classes but I think that’s because of its quarter system. And yeah, unlike Berkeley, people at UCLA don’t care much about politics, lol.

@AnthroFlo

It’s funny how Cal is on the semester system but somehow manages to make academic life for its students harder than UCLA does for theirs. UCLA, from what I’ve heard, seems to be a little more laid back. Still, the quarter system doesn’t allow for much procrastinating.

@anthroflo, yeah I feel you. I felt that way for well over a year. After I visited UCLA, I knew I’d SIR there immediately if admitted. It just felt right.

And I applied for the B.A.!

@Zalrons
Nice (: What do you hope to do with your degree?
UCLA does have good vibes, but I would be lying if I didn’t say something about Cal captivated me.
Being honest, I think a bit of it is pride (going there to try and prove myself) and the potential for intellectual growth because I will be surrounded by incredibly gifted and intelligent people. But the academic aspect worries me.

@Cayton
Very true, and it is something I have heard that time and time again.
I don’t mind if UCLA is a little bit more relaxed with their academics, if anything I perfer that bit of breathing room. Oh the quarter system, how I fear the quarter system…

@wintergreen, STEM majors do not necessarily need to complete IGETC. However, if there’s another candidate with similar stats they will most likely get that person over the one with no IGETC.

@Loyshi

Regarding about the berkeley summer session trick, I tried it back in 2012. I was able to see my financial aid information about 1 week prior to the decision date, and I was admit. If you able to see it, most likely you are in! =) Best Luck to you!

@STEMChem Dang your stats seem amazing! you seem like a shoe-in for Berkeley. im jealous lol, you’ve got both a better GPA and more ECs than me lol. oh well i can only hope for the best now, and that we get in only 12 more days!

@Zalrons It’s interesting to hear that you consider the semester system an advantage. Most of my friends who are at schools with quarter systems seem to prefer it over semester. One of them says it’s because there’s less chance of being assigned busy work, which is true. I do admit that I get tired of my classes pretty quickly. But it’s all personal preference, I guess.

@moon9kittie

I have another friend who’s doing summer session, but not applying yet. Unlike him, I see an addition year 2014-15 giving me cost of attending, but 0 so far for gift aid. Would I see something 1 week before then? Thanks
