I was accepted to both schools and I was leaning more towards OSU however their financial package was disappointing to say the least. Meanwhile Kent State offered me a very good scholarship and financial aid package. I’m intending on majoring in a flight program at either school. Should I pick the arguably “more prestigious” option in Ohio State for more debt or choose the more affordable option in Kent State,
Not sure what flight program is but what is the dollar difference, will your career need grad school?
Around $15,000 give or take. I will not need grad school.
Can you afford tOSU without heavy debt (i.e. the student loan max of $27K)?
@lanckim5 - so I assume 15 k a year for 4 years is 60 grand , a pretty sizable chunk of change. If your family can afford the 60 K difference you have a decision to make, if 15k a year plus what ever else they are paying is a big deal you have your answer.
I would really look at starting pay for a pilot. It isn’t very high. Debt will be hard to repay.
Eeyore123 is correct that the starting pay for a pilot is low. My husband is a Captain and has been with his company for 24 years. He is a graduate of OSU’s aviation program. While OSU’s program is great, we had many years of very low income as I was just starting out as a teacher and he was still building hours to upgrade his type ratings and then sitting as an FO with low base pay for years. The long-term financial situation is definitely worth going into aviation, but the first 5-10 years can be tough. Be smart and really evaluate your financial situation.
