Who can tell me about day to day life for a first year student at Drexel? How do you make friends, find your way around? What was your first month like?

Drexel’s a pretty diverse school, so I can really only speak for myself here. The day to day life, finding your way around, how you make friends, etc are all completely dependent on the person. Personally, I made most of my friends through clubs/organizations and my classes. Other students made most of their friends through their residence hall. I was always really active and rarely in my room except to sleep, so while I was friends with my roommates and floormates, I spent much more time with my friends that I knew from classes and from groups I joined.

Finding your way around really isn’t that difficult. Despite what it seems like when you take your first tour, campus is really not very big. The academic buildings are all pretty condensed into a 2-square-block area and all connected; getting from class to class isn’t hard. The same thing with the residence halls and the non-academic buildings - All condensed in one area. From my building to the farthest classroom was only about a 10 minute walk. As long as you have a map for your first couple days, you really shouldn’t have any big problems.

My first month was awesome. It was a combination of getting oriented towards college-style classes and coursework, meeting new people, enjoying the freedom of being a college student, and learning to live independently. I’m very passionate about what I study (engineering), and while I was never ecstatic about it, found that I enjoyed my classes and work much more than I did in High School. Again, these experiences vary from person to person though; Just because I enjoyed having more freedom and responsibility being away from my parents, doesn’t mean that your son/daughter will.

Let me know if you have any other questions! The more specific or focused the better, as I mentioned, questions so general can be hard to answer.

@OnWithTheRiotDU can you tell me more about Drexel Housing? I heard that Drexel housing is pretty bad, especially the Myers Hall, where I am going to stay if I attend this fall. Also they have just mysteriously add 5k to my room and board fees in the award letter and move it from indirect fees to direct fees. So I really need to reconsider my decisions. Thank you.

Hey Khaaaaan,
I don’t know where in the world you heard that Drexel housing is bad; I think I’ve probably been in atleast 30 dorms across the tri-state area because of visits to friends and older brothers and I think Drexel’s are among the nicest.

About the 5k thing, I can’t help you there. Emailing admissions or housing would probably be the smartest thing to do.

I lived in Race Hall my freshman year and currently live in Millennium Hall because I’m doing a summer program at Drexel before my sophomore year. My experience in both was pretty awesome.

Myers is pretty awesome too. For one thing, it has what I think are probably the biggest rooms I’ve ever seen for freshman anywhere. It’s also home to the living-learning-communities. The way LLC’s work is by grouping students from one school (I.E Engineering, Nursing, Westphal, Business, Etc) into a wing of the building; in other words, each section of Myers is home to a different community of students from one of Drexel’s colleges or schools. It’s a great environment because everyone around you has mostly the same classes; finding people to study or do homework with is really easy.

There’s also a tutor lounge in Myers where tutors from different departments at Drexel come every week. Its really awesome because you can get help outside of class, and it’s right in your building.

Please let me know if you have any other questions!

@OnWithTheRiotDU thank you for your answer. I knew how the LLC works. It’s just that I have read it somewhere in this forum that Myers is the oldest dorm and it is full of cockroaches. Idk how it is worth 15k a year.

Also do you know the Honors program requirements? They rejected me and told me to reapply this winter.

Thank you

Myers is definitely not the oldest… I’ve never lived there so I can’t speak definitely either, but I never heard any of my friends complain haha. My current roommate lived in the Engineering LLC and he says he really enjoyed Myers.

Here’s the requirements for current Drexel students to enter the honors program:
http://drexel.edu/honors/incomingStudents/apply/Current%20Students/

Let me know if you have any other questions!

With your time ticket, are the dorms shown the only ones that will ever be shown? Or if you wait a whole, may more dorms appear?

I believe that means that there are no more rooms available in other buildings. I couldn’t tell you for sure, however… The only circumstance that I can imagine in which more rooms open up would be if they had closed Milennium to allow the honors students to fill it first and then open it once all honors students have made their choice. But I don’t believe that is likely, as I think they place the students before the housing selection process starts.
