the overwhelming world of standardized testing!

So, just to know if I'm not completely isolated from humanity, has anybody taken the ACT as well as the SAT? First off, I took the sat 2X-first time i thought i did bad, and i did badly. second time i thought i did excellent, did bad (but a little betteR). so, i resorted to the ACT. rumor has it that it's an easy test..that's why they're rumors (b/c they're NOT TRUE!). well, cutting to the chase, I basically began to panic about the 2nd question into the science section, even after having practiced hours on end...same w/the reading. the math i thought was tough, but not as rigorous as the science. I began guessing on quite a number of them b/c i was so overwhelmed w/the time constraints that i began thinking how my future was rotting away before my eyes. Has anybody been in this situation before besides me? If so, did you thikn you did really really bad on the ACT's and did better than you thought? (out of curiosity^_^ )

all i know is i took both once each

Yessssss. Well, to the overwhelming question.

I took the SATs in April and June, did reasonably well in April (not by standards on these boards, though), and I felt much more confident with the June test, but not sure how that's going to play out yet.

Didn't so much as look at an ACT book until yesterday when I decided it would be a good idea to at least know what the test looked like lol, and did well on the practice test not completely giving it my full attention so I went in this morning feeling like I had the chance to do REALLY well on it (planning to take it again in the fall, this was kind of just for "fun"). I had finished the writing and math like 20-30 mins early on the practice and was comfortably able to finish the other ones... but I got to the test today and I don't know what happened, but starting feeling the same way. I wasn't able to finish the math (even with everyone saying it was SO easy).

I'm kind of disapointing, not expecting to do that well unfortunately, but it's really not the end of the world. There's always the fall and your future is certainly not rotting away if you don't get a certain score. It maaay have an impact on colleges but in a few years from now, it's not going to matter what you got on these silly tests.

Yes, that is true. The only thing is my test scores in NO way reflect my gpa lol. I hate standardized tests as much as anybody else, and i have no idea how average people get 36's and 2200+ on act/sat. as soon as college admissions comes up, i'm scrapping this. but until then, i'm never going to get rid of this stupid stress that i don't need lol. idk it's frustrating b/c they're like "you have to do well on you'll never get into college." i know it's not true, but people (i.e. teachers, counselors, peers, and ESPEC. parents) surely pound it into my head.

Yeah, same here. I just really don't like tests, but have worked hard and done well in school so it's just frustrating to not see it all match up.

I say that it doesn't matter, and I know it's completely true, but that doesn't make it any less stressful.

What's nice is there's a handfull of schools that don't require the tests. I hate them so much. They show no aspect of a student's intelligence. It's just how well can you take a test? The whole thing is a game and you have to learn the tricks and be able to master it. I took the SAT and i thought i did well and did on the writing, but my math and reading were well depressing.

So i switched to the ACT and studied like crazy for two months and took it this weekend and feel alright about it. The timing was rough though. I freaked out on the reading but somehow got it done. I say study for them and take the ACT again...

I definitely agree with you...The reading was INCREDIBLE in its time constraints i felt like i was gonna pass out seriously i was like "this is it. i just suck @ life" lol. But, I also thought science was even harder, b/c half the stuff you had to read SO quickly to get it done w/in the time constraints, then who had time left to understand it? that one reading passage about the business thing in japan was SO HARD to understand i just gave up lol.

I took the ACT on sunday, so i had a different test. But i coud have sworn that there were questions on the science section that didnt have answers anywhere in the passages. I kept looking for the numbers and stuff but they were honestly not there. SO FRUSTRATING

I KNOW I KNOW!!! didn't you just want to scream in the middle of it? Or, at least, rip somethign apart lol. All I know is that I am stupid for believing all those "the sat is harder than the ACT" rumors...oh well!! At least, there's no guessing penalty, so, even if you got the answer wrong, it might not be as bad of a score as the SAT...time will tell when we get our scores (which i think we can get on the 20th of June, if you paylike 8 dollars..i'm too chicken to check it then haha).

I guess I'm one of those who thought the ACT was way easier. Yeah, I got killed on reading the first time through (April 8th) but then the 2nd time through (June) I paced myself much better and the questions are sooo much more straightforward than those on the SAT! The science was fairly difficult in April but easier in June so I hope I did well on that since I did decently (by the standards of CC) in April.

Average people don't get 36's on the ACT nor 2200+ on the SAT. Only on these boards...average for the SAT is 1500 and ACT is about a 23? I'm not sure about the ACT...

I've taken the SAT and the ACT twice each, and will never take either again (except for the SAT IIs)

The average composite for the ACT is around a 20.

the ACT would be much easier if the science was not included. The SAT sucks because it has vocabulary, and somehow I got really lucky and guessed the right words to fit into sentences last time. I prefer the ACT just because you don't have to send all the scores into the colleges, so keep studying and keep taking it until you get what you want, THEN send that score in.

I prefer the SAT because I did well on it to begin with.

I love the SAT! i did better and next time, I have good reason to believe my math score will rise!
act=31
SAT= 1460/2210 ~ 33
Expected Final SATS = 1510/2260 ~ 34

Does the 1460/2210 imply that you took the SAT twice? I was wondering b/c if you increased your score from a 1460 to a 2210, I WANT TO KNOW HOW YOU DID IT!!!! I increased from a 1530 to a 1680...my minimum cutoff was a 2000, but obviously I didn't even come close!

no. sorry if that was confusing. my math + reading = 1460, and my math + reading + writing = 2210. I have only taken it once. I gave both because some college only look at math + reading while many consider all three.

I think the poster means 1460 based on the old SAT and 2210 based on the new SAT with Writing score included.
