In general, how does Bates look? I’ve gone online and seen the majority of the pictures on the campus tour and it looks a bit old. As a city girl, I don’t mind older buildings but being constantly surrounded by older architecture and furnishings may not be my cup of tea… So in your opinion, how is it?

The buildings themselves are very new outside the center of the campus. Top quality inside. The town itself will be somewhat of a disappointment to you though. City-girl =/= Lewiston-Auburn

I personally think Bates has very beautiful buildings and campus as a whole. The inside of MOST of the buildings are very modern. There are one or two which are a bit outdated.

I attended Bates and I think if you’re a city girl you may find the college a bit too boring and sheltered, both architecturally and culturally. But in the winter (so most of the school year) it will be so cold any shelter will look great.

Bates has a beautiful campus in my opinion, but we all have our own tastes. The campus is primarily red brick, and though some of the buildings are older, many are modern and updated inside. Technology is up-to-date and the college is currently about to begin a building project that will update some of the facilities. The new dorms (280) are absolutely beautiful. The gym is small and slightly run-down. I would suggest checking out the video or googling pictures of campus if you haven’t already and yes, it can be cold - it’s Maine!

One of the prettier campus’ I’ve seen. And quite compact, which can be a huge plus in the Maine winters, especially on windy days. Some of the buildings are older, but spacious and modern inside. The newer buildings are bright, airy and big. Very nice campus - definitely better than Colby.

I have to agree with stressDad, really nice campus and some of the dorms being part of town are really nice. The fact it is part of town relieves the isolation. The Dining Hall is fabulous and the food fantastic and across from this building is a new building with a spectacular atrium. It is a nice mix of old and new and very classy and comforting.

Bowdoin gets most of the “prettiest college” hype of the Maine LACs, but to me, it’s Bates. Bowdoin has a few nice buildings, and the setting in Brunswick is idyllic, but the campus itself is quaint and nice, but it doesn’t hold a candle to Bates in my opinion.
I would put Bates’ campus up with any in the NESCAC.
I love the campus too. In fact, my D (who attends Bates) thought the Bowdoin campus was “creepy” when we visited the Perry museum while on vacation. She didn’t like the pine trees and thought it looked a bit cemetery-like, with white marble everywhere. This was a full year before she even knew about Bates.
We also thought the Bates campus was much prettier than Bowdoin. We only visited it because it was on our way home from a wedding in Booth Bay when S was a rising Junior. This was during a time when he insisted he was not going to college in Maine (he went to Bates and loved every minute of it.)
It looks and feels “cold.” You have to like winter and snow, be a winter carnival kind of person to really appreciate it. I spent 2 years there before transferring. Lewiston is also rather provincial.
Good point @emilybee . I’m totally with you on that! Sundown at 4:00 is downright dreary. I heard that Maine is considering staying on daylight savings time year round although I have no idea about how such a decision is made and approved.
Bates is very pretty. Click on the birds eye view video. https://www.bates.edu/canopy/ Of course, this isn’t in winter, but winter can be very pretty too.
