The Post Office Box Question

Question: is this the only mailbox a student will have on campus? Do student organizations still put fliers and other information in mailboxes? In order to receive inter departmental types of mailings, would this also be required? Or is everything done by email now?

I think you still have to have a PO Box to receive FedEx ground.

Yes you can get small, large packages. With PO Boxes, anything that is mailed via US Mail will get to you. If it’s too large or has to be signed for, they put a yellow tag in your box and you pick it up at a window. I’m a Postmaster.

You cannot receive FedEx at a Postal Service PO Box - Fed Ex is a private company - You have to pay postage aka the Postal Service, if it’s FedEx - they are getting the money. There are instances where FedEx and the Postal Service have an agreement for the USPS to delivery packages “the last mile” but you will not know which ones might be delivered via this special program. If you use a private company like “Mail Boxes Etc” your mail box could possibly receive all types of deliveries, but those boxes probably cost much more. Also, PO boxes can now be paid online at [USPS - The United States Postal Service (U.S. Postal Service)](http://www.usps.com)

If you send only books, nothing else in the package, you can use Media Mail which is a lot cheaper than most other services. Flat Rate is good for all other stuff that is heavy and going far basically.

karamare: did you notice that this thread was last active almost a year ago? And is for people who are now finished with their freshmen year at Yale?

Question: does the PO box remain assigned through to the following year? We have not received a renewal form, and my son does have magazine subscriptions that come to his box. It was a little unclear last year as to whether the fee has to be paid annually.

Yes, they keep the same P.O. box for all 4 years. I think the payment is due by the end of August. It’s always confusing - I think they either send the bill to the PO box address or don’t send one. Each year I have to figure it out all over again. I finally registered on USPS.com (and set up a reminder email for myself) and I pay it through that site. I believe I called the Yale Station Post Office one year and paid it over the phone with a credit card.

Thanks, Yalemom! Just sent in the check by mail.
