As a complete newbie to the process, I have spent a lot of time looking at a variety of CC posts to get my questions answered. I haven’t actually posted any questions (yet!) since there has always been a previous thread or threads which addressed my concerns and lack of knowledge. Many times, different threads can give me alternative perspectives on apparently similar issues. So, despite the repetitiveness of many of the questions, thanks for addressing them!

Sorry everyone. After re-reading some of the posts, I can see why you guys are enjoying listing them and remembering how people ask crazy things every year. I’m just stressed about this process and trying to absorb as much information as I can so I can feel like I have some control (which I really don’t at this point). Currently waiting to hear the financial award offers so we can make some decisions. The waiting is killing me.

Be nice. It may be new to many. And some of this comes as a shock when you really get into it.

Concerned- chill. Just remember, a year from now you will be waiting to hear from your kid who never seems to call, and although you imagine him locked out of his dorm, starving because he lost his swipe card, and flunking out because he can’t get to class on time, eventually you discover that he hasn’t called because in between rehearsals for the Spring theatrical production (and you’ll say- my kid doing theater?) and his roommates poetry slam (poetry?) and helping to organize the political union’s debate between Rick Santorum and Rahm Emanuel (my kid- political?) he just never has time to call.

That’s a long wait!!! This is nothing!

Ok , here is an example of a thread that was posted this morning
<a href=“College Admissions - Applying to College - College Confidential Forums”>College Admissions - Applying to College - College Confidential Forums;
This is the kind of thing that makes me kind of sad and frustrated at the same time.

That is a doozie, RunsWScissors!

If that’s a real post and not a ■■■■■, it’s pretty bad. Where’s the guidance counselor?

Agreed. I have volunteered for our counseling center and would have been thrilled to help this student. Looks like First Gen too.

runs …scissors, perfect example.

Sadly, based on the fact that the post was made 23 minutes after the account was created and that the post was made in the middle of the school day and the student applied to Columbia and Stanford instead of Cooper and SLO, I’m betting on ■■■■■. The frustrating thing is that people are actually trying to offer advice, which takes away from time that they could be advising on real issues, and makes people like me reluctant to respond to posters with a single post.

Yes, it still amazes me that people think it is fun to make up stuff on a forum like this, but at the same time I’m sure many of us actually know someone in real life who put themselves in a similar situation. I know I do.

^I’m afraid the kid isn’t a ■■■■■, due to the fact a ■■■■■ wouldn’t have unearthed a list of schools that are NAAB-accredited … including an unknown such as Woodbury ( a small CA school that’s extremely expensive and has basically no FA.)

With regard to frequently repeated questions, maybe CCs needs Admissions FAQs and FA FAQs, if it doesn’t already have them. So, the old-timers could just refer newbies to the FAQs.

In my work, when we teach seminars, we often get requests for help that are the equivalent of the following: “I decided to drive through Death Valley today but was in a rush and I didn’t have time to fill up my tank or pack water. My cell phone ran out of power and now I’ve run out of gas. If you are any good, tell me how solve my problem with no inconvenience, fuss or muss.” Before I address this, I say, the real lesson is that you shouldn’t have ended up there and we need to put in place a planning process that prevents that from happening the next time.

I think the tone of mockery may come when people who post the admissions or FA Stranded in Death Valley request for help even though on CC (and in many other places), the preventative steps are readily available.

Uh, it does. There are stickied threads at the top of (virtually) every forum.

^@Erin’s Dad. I know. But, maybe they need to be organized in a way that a poster can easily refer people to them without spending five minutes searching for the thread that is right. I’ve noticed that even when there are stickied threads, the new thread will have multiple pages of responses.

next year this thread should be interesting in a whole new way for #2, right now we are dealing with “A” for #1 … :(

(1) “less qualified” student Y (than I --or my S/D)-- got into College X. )Whoops, forgot to mention a minor detail: I HAVEN’T SEEN THE FILE FOR STUDENT Y.)

(2) I didn’t get into fave College X. Therefore, the admissions process is racist/unfair/biased/fill-in-the-blank.
