I personally think that all of us stand out in our own ways and with the ED boost , we should all be accepted into Columbia!!!

freakish what's cusp?

ok here's my take.. I really am trying to be brutally honest.. and going with intuition and my take on all of this..
But I won't reject anyone because I don't know what qualities a "reject" should have.. and also I really do have faith in all of you.. and I don't want anyone to be R here..

D?

A

hmm toughie I think A? but maybe D 1st

A?

D

A?

A

D (maybe cus you put "essay is ok" etc...)

A?

A (Being Haitian will help I think)

A? (probably A)

A (that legacy will help)

I won't be my own judge

A?

Woah! So much stuff... A

Silver_waves--why does the adcom defer people? I never really saw the point...if I have a 4.0 why would they wait for my midyear report...?

Usually you aren't deferred because they want to wait for your Midyear Report. You get deferred because you don't stand out enough for them to accept you without seeing the rest of the applicant pool.

cusp is border.

Also...I edited my info, made tit more specific, a while ago, but people didn't copy my edited stats so I'm reputting them here for future predictions, if it changes anything.

Freakish- 1510 highest (800 v,710 m) 620w,690,700. EXCELLENT recommendations from two teachers, supplemental from editor of a real newspaper I write on,great interview, good ( or so I've been told)essay, recommendation from an alumni representative who is in contact with the admissions office and spoke to them and gave them some of my movie reviews (from the newspaper) yesterday. Charter member (1st yr member of few clubs), including Model U.N which I'm treasurer. School Newspaper. 3.92 uw, 4.4 weighted

ok.. so am i borderline or A or A? or D?

silverwavez...is there a difference between your A and your A?

Freakish, maybe I'm just a sad person but that was the funniest comment I've heard all day...

I wasnt sure..truly, I initially would've said D, but then I realized that you're comng from singapore and you do really well in IB, so A.

thank you angelnikki

hmm what language do they speak in singapore?

okay honestly idk how much these little descriptions say, but i think the people who posted here are definitely very strong applicants. if i was to "defer" a few, that decision would be made on some small detail that could be drowned in the great part of the app that i can't see here. also, it's good that we all have confidence in our essays as they were sent, but we can't really depend on our own subjective opinions on our essays to reflect that of the adcom.

so the pt of this is that i'm not going to defer anyone because i think it will do emotional damage and is not based on much... but i will name 5 ppl who i think will/should certainly get in.

glory, calla66, opalstar, rushinrunner, rp123

good job ppl
and the rest of you also have a great shot... CC ppl pretend to know alot more than we do, so dont let us get you down

yeah---keep in mind, dont get discouraged, these dont mean much. they're kind of fun and time-consuming and....itll be interesting to see how they hold up to the actual predictions.

1.Antisthenes- 1560 (800v, 760m), 720w,800,800. Good recs (one of them is for sure, the other is kind of a wild card, but should be quite good). Good/great essay, so I've been told. Pretty good ECs (4 or so 4-yr activities, leadership positions). 3.7 GPA, top 16% class rank, ugh.

Class Rank is cause for pause. A/D mix, depends on adcom.

2.calla66- 1500 (800m, 700v) 780 IIC, 700 bio, 740 writing. recs from teachers and counselor are good. GPA 4.5; rank 3/160 top 2%. Essay is on the "risky" side and is really creative according to English teachers who have read it (I used two points of view and talked to the reader). ECs: all state orchestra 2 years, member of 6 other orchestras (concertmaster in 3), a lot of working with 6th graders and worked at a tutoring center for kids, some volunteering, but not a significant amount, VP of nhs. asian female

Accepted. Top student.

3.Contessa- 1590 (800v, 790m), 750w, 800 chem, 780 lit. great recs :-). risky essay. president of: amnesty int'l, indian american society, mathletes, we the people constitution team; editor in chief of lit magazine. columbia SHP. 97 weighted. top decile. indian female. long island, new york.

DaniLanchy - 1470 (690v, 780m) 720w, 720iic, 750bio-m. 4.5 weighted, 3.8 unweighted, 8 of 409. One excellent recommendation, one good. Ive been told the essay is good (I have a unique story).

Rejection. Too much based on sup apps- they cannot replace your poor SAT IIs. GPA, rank not mentioned, indicating that rank is not strong.

gl0ry - 1540 (M800 V740) 760/740/710; Strong recs/strong essay/great interview; Rank: 13/733; State Officer for FBLA; 1st Place at FBLA State Leadership Conference for 3 yrs; Coordinator of Nationally sanctioned triathlon; Gold and Silver Medals on National Latin Exam; NMSF; Chinese Female.

jskim3487-1490(780m, 710v) 800-writing, 760-IIC, 790-Am. History, 670-chem, 620-Bio. GPA-4.5 (equivalent of A+..my school's kinda wierd...it doesn't use 4.0 scale..)
one of the recommendation should be good, the other decent..essay is okay, i think...good interview..mediocre ECs..lot of volunteering but few leadership positions in school..

Defer/Acceptance. ECs are only weakness. Great rank and scores.

kissoffxo-1440(750 m, 690v) 750-1C, 620 Lit, 620 wriing, 4.4 weighted, 3.6 uniweighted. both recommendations great. started anti substance abuse club. academic decathalon. 4 years tennis. 2 years ASB class vice-president. president amnesty international. some volunteering. essay pretty good. southern california. korean.

3.6 gpa might be too low? Defer/Rejection: scores not that great, although your ECs look fine. I would defer to see your 1st semester grades.

rushinrunner - (ED) SAT-1450 (800M, 650V) 720Writing, 750 Biology, 700 Math IC. 99 out 100 GPA, ranked 15th out of 530. One excellent recommendation and one good one. Good essay. Good (long) interview. Father graduated from Columbia University. Captain of the Cross Country team and current captain of Indoor Track, went to National Finals last year. Science Research paper published by North East Educational Research Association.

Double capt, research paper, legacy, strong grades and rank=acceptance. One of the strongest on this list.

silver_wavez (ED from an Intl school in Singapore; nationality = Korean; sex = F) 1350 (680 M, 670 V) rather bad SAT 2 scores (670 writing). Excellent school grades/transcript predicted between 41-43 out of 45 for IB. School does not rank. 2 AMAZING teacher recommendations (history and English) and 1 good rec from math teacher (so Ive been told by my cousellor). Activities pretty focused on art, photography, community service and dancing. 2 strong leadership positions. Have been told that my essay is really good. I think I had a really good interview as well. Supplementary material pictures of my oil paintings.

Defer? Amazing everything else, but poor scores. Depends on the quality of your oil paintings I guess :P

smithk(ED) - 1340(700 V, 600 M) 640Writing, 740US History, 690Biology. 4.10 weighted, 3.9 unweighted. Excellent Recomendations from AP Spainh and AP English Teacher.

Accepted, decent scores and GPA for a URM. (you are only 1 of 1800 blacks to score above a 1300!)

rp123 - ED SEAS, Female, NJ, Highly competitive magnet schoo, 1410, 750IIC, 740W,660Chem, toughest possible courseload, have taken APs since 9th grade, 7 altogether, good work exp, scientific research project, great ECs international touring dancer, unique essay, amazing rec and one good one, rank 10/246, good interview

Your SAT is below the SEAS average, but then again you've got a great rank and you're a female. I think (with mostly 5s on your APs, including BC and Phys C) you're in. Otherwise, I'd defer.

specktackyoulerr- 1510 (770V, 740 M) 780 Writing, 760 Literature, 750 Math IC. GPA around 96 (school does not weigh grades). Excellent recs from Eng Teacher, Law Teacher, and Prof at University of Toronto (I work for him as a research assistant), all of whom have known me for around 3 yrs. Mediocre GC rec (2 GCs for a school of 1300, so the counselors dont know the students too well). Interview went well-- she said "Columbia would be lucky to have you"-- hopefully this counts for something. Essay on life-altering car accident in ninth grade. Bad ECs because I have had to work 20+/wk (Library and University of Toronto) for the past 3 yrs to help support my family: Environmental Club Executive (member for 3 yrs); Tutor (within school and as volunteer); School Newspaper Co-Founder, Co-editor. Wored throughout all summers and attended one session at the Columbia SHSP. Asian Canadian student, although I have lived in Beijing, NYC and Toronto (I dunno if this will help). Applied for alot fin aid (hopefully CU is truly need blind to Canadians as they promise).

Freakish, maybe I'm just a sad person but that was the funniest comment I've heard all day. - lol what the comment about if there is a diff between my A and A?

in singapore the official language of instruction is english.

and yeh my A - means a definite acceptance
A? - acceptance but not sure..

" CC ppl pretend to know alot more than we do, so dont let us get you down" - and this is probably true lol..

don't let my list get to u.. cus i don't really know what i'm talking about either.. i jsut went with my judgements cus thats what this thread is for right?

and contessa why do u think those 5 ppl will and should certainly get in?

ugh....I DID MENTION MY GPA!!!!, people just copied my unedited portion from the beginning, and I didnt post rank just because I didnt think it was necessary having posted my GPA. My GPA unweightwed is 3.92, weighted is 4.42. Rank is 16/555. top 3 percent...only got 1 b in high school so, i can see why you thought what you thought about my rank/gpa, but wrong inference. Does that alter your prediction duskstamper, or is it the same.

Duskstamper...you forgot me...

:(

u know its actually impossible to accurately predict because SEAS and college have somewhat different requirements. like engineering is more math and science involved. anyway..we just gettin everyones hopes up and feeding them sugar by predicting everyones gonna get accepted because at least one of us is bound to get rejected

NOT ME! puts finger on nose

NOT ME! puts finger on her nose tambien

uh i'm top 10%

(that's the highest percentile released by my school)
