The SATII Effect

I read that when applying to CAS they “encourage” a language SATII. I didn’t take one. I never planned to take a language SATII. The language I took in school was Spanish (no room to take it senior year) but I was horrible at it. I don’t plan on continuing Spanish in college either. If I take a Spanish SATII I think I’ll be around 500 at best. I have taken 3 other SATIIs with 800 MathIIC, 800 USH, 790 Chem. Will they even look at a really bad language SATII? Will a really bad score hurt my admissions chances? Will I kill my chances by not taking a language SATII at all? I sort of need to know soon so I can register for the November SATII Spanish if I need to.

You can avoid all SATIIs by submitting ACT scores (see pg 4 on their application) Don't stress : )

Venkater, I am in a similar situation to you (I was horrible at Spanish and decided to drop it this year even though I continued with my other language, Russian) and I most definately DO NOT plan on taking a language SAT II. You have excellent SAT II's as it is and the addition of a Language SAT II, especially if the score is in the 500's, will not really help you.

Does it help to get in if you are SUPERIOR at a foreign language? It seems so many people claim to be awful at languages. So, does it help to be super in Spanish?

if you are hispanic, then it won't help that you can speak spanish. if you're fluent in 3 different languages from 3 different continents then yea, i guess that's pretty cool.

and where'd you read that they "encourage" a language satII? all i read was that they wanted 2 "varied" subjects. (like yours, history & chem together)

"Students applying to the College are encouraged to take a foreign language Subject Test. This test is used for both admissions and proper placement at the college level. Appropriate language scores also afford exemption from the language requirement."

<a href="http://www.admissionsug.upenn.edu/applying/testing.php%5B/url%5D">http://www.admissionsug.upenn.edu/applying/testing.php</a></p>

Probably the scariest thing I've read because I know that at this level "encourage" or "recomend" means DO IT OR ELSE. I guess it is good to take it for placement, but still it isnt the best thing to read when I'm ready to send in my app and be done with college board.

definitely agreeing with you there... =/
crap.

I did not take a language SAT 2 and I still got in. This was the case for a lot of people. They just want you to take it for placement. If you are not going to get 700+ (or 650 at the lowest) I would definitely recommend taking an SAT 2 in a stronger subject. You can always take the placement test for language when you get here.

"Will a really bad score hurt my admissions chances?"( given you have two or three good scores)

Does anyone know anything about this?
