The Summer SAT Study Thread: Progress for the October SAT

@lanflanWhere do you find released tests? I’m planning on doing the same, a test a week and I’ll run out. Btw, how good do you guys think McGraw Hill’s book is? Friend gave me an unused one for free because he never got ti use it, but how well is it stack up to the real thing?

Great thread! I took the June SAT and received a 1740 (600 Writing 630 Math 510 Critical Reading). I will retake it in October and am aiming for a 2200+

Hi, again great thread. Sadly on cc there’s so much controversy with a lot of the sat books so I am still confused on what books to buy. The least controversial ones seem to be the ultimate guide to grammar and essential 500’s so those two I’m buying for sure but I am still lost on the essay and math portion. The two I’m deciding between in essay portion are the how to write a killer essay in 25 min and collegepanda’s advanced guide. For math its even more controversial but the most popular ones seem to be Gruber, Chung(some people love it, some people despise it), pwn sat, and Dr. Steve’s 32 effective strategies and 28 advanced math lessons. Oh and my math score is around 650-720( I feel like a lot of them are stupid mistakes) so if anyone has any insight into which books I should buy or even just your opinion it would be greatly appreciated. I only have a few weeks before school starts so I want to hurry up and start studying :)

Oh and also for CR many people say you can’t study for it with prep books(which I still dont get if anyone could explain this) but many people say the critical reader by metlzer is a good choice even though its very expensive with my low budget. Ty!

This thread seems to be a real encouragement. I am an international student and since English is not my first language, I am really nervous. I plan to take SAT in October and recently when I took a practice test I scored 1500 which is quite low. I am like dead scared, I don’t know how to boost up my scores.
I really want to, actually I have to score above 2100.
Please help me guys. :(

I’m gonna be a senior next year, and english is my second language so that my sat scores are really really low.
My current superscore is1610 (490CR,750M,370WR). And i wanna bump my score up to 2100(650,800,650). I’m just preparing sat with the big blue book, the official sat online course. But I’m not sure the book and online course will improve my sat scores within 3 months. Im planning to take SAT in August and December.

@aa12345 and @iwanttogochapel‌ I’m in the exact same situation as you guys XD I’m an international student and I have struggled a lot with the SAT for the past year. I scored a 1610 and a 145 on my very first practice SAT and PSAT about 9 months ago; but, now I’m scoring solid 1900s. Still, it isn’t anything special; but, it’s a huge improvement for me. English is also not my native language (I live and originate from Finland btw); so, it was very difficult for me at the start until I started reading English books. Reading helped me to get over the first struggles of the SAT which in my case were thinking critically in English and understanding complex passages while reading quickly. I’m now just honing all the rules for the writing, math, and CR section. Good luck guys!

I’m going to be a sophomore next year, but I want to take the SAT before it changes, since I don’t really want to be the guinea pig for the new SAT. Who knows if it’ll be better or worse, and I don’t want to take the risk. Plus there are so many review books and stuff for the old SAT, it just seems silly to do the new SAT. (Class of 2017 struggles -_-)

Anyway I just took a couple practice tests and ended up with close to a 1810. CR is definitely the worst, so I’ve been using DH (it’s the 2011 version, but it’s the only one I have access to right now) and then I’ve been reading Erica Meltzer’s guide. The essay also kills me too: 25 minutes is so short to me.

I currently have the BB (10 tests) the Online course (10 tests?) released tests (5?) and a couple practice PSAT’s. (5)
Hopefully this will be enough for the October/November SAT. I hope to get close to a 2300 in the fall.

So just posting my progress, my first practice SAT (Im using the blue book) was a 1930 , which isn’t bad for a first time if I must say so myself. Just took my second one and I got a 1900 :(.

Analysis: Lower CR score (670 to 640), same M score (700), but W went a 90 points up! (560 to 650). The W score is definitely progress, and I think I’m starting to get which rules I’m missing on so that’s good. CR- Need to work on vocab, that seems to be around half of my mistakes (Got Direct Hits and will start using that). Math- not much work needed, just practice I guess. I know the concepts

Next goal: breaking the 2000+ mark, hopefully the 2050+ for the next practice test

Wow, I really like this thread now. Good luck to everyone else on here for studying and stuff

I’ve always been an avid reader of these forums and finally decided to make an account since October will be my last ever SAT. I have never been good at standarized testing.

Since this is a progress thread, I would like to start from the beginning. In my sophomore year (I am a rising senior now) I scored a 145 on my PSAT, which was kind of a wake up call for me. So I enrolled in an SAT class over the summer which was kind of like prison (Had prison bars on the window). It took up my whole summer with classes Mon,Wed,Fri 8am-4pm. With homework of full length practice tests to take home. Although it was a lot of work, I kind of enjoyed it. When it came time for the October 2013 i got a 2040. (690 CR/700 M/ 650W). I was pretty happy, also knowing that I can take the test again. I always wanted a 2200+ so I planned on taking it again anyways.

So time passed and I was caught up in school, since Junior year was kind of busy aha. Always planning that I’d be taking the next SAT in the next closet SAT date, however I slacked and registered for the May SAT. It had been months since I’ve did SAT work and the test was only a week away. So I decided to cram. These were bad times as well since AP tests were coming up so I was just stacked with things to study. So I did a practice test the week before and everyday leading to my SAT, besides the Friday which was a chill day. I started with somewhere around low 1900s and worked my way up to a 2150 on practice tests. I felt pretty confident with taking the real one.

However, a month later scores came out and I received a 1870. (590 CR/660M/620W) So now school ended I now I have to make the most out of my summer. I purchased both Erica Meltzers Critical Reader and Grammar book, as well as PWN the Math. As I read through these books I will be taking a practice test every week or so. My goal is just a 2200+. Sorry this was a long post aha but it is a progress thread after all.

Hi everyone! I’m a rising junior, and I recently got around an 1800 on a practice test. I achieved a very high writing score and a moderately high CR score, but an unfortunately low math score. My goal is to get a 2300+ on the test. I have two prep books- Barron’s and Up Your Score- and I’m taking an SAT prep class over the summer. I have a long way to go before achieving my desired score, but I’ve been reading up on strategies, reviewing math concepts, and learning vocabulary words to try to bump up my score.

@szluck13‌ @sdfgsd‌ hi I was wondering if you can tell me how well the Erica Meltzer books work after few more weeks of using them? I already heard good things about the ultimate grammar book but could you guys tell me if the critical reader is worth it for the price? Since it is pretty expressive. Thank you!

Does anyone know when we can start registering for the SAT? I looked at the collegeboard website… there were just links to register for SAT IIs…

@WooTheDay‌
You can register now.

I started reading the strategies out of the Barron’s 2400 book and most of their CR strategies are the exact same as PR strategies, except they also have alternatives. Even though I got it for the math section I thought I might as well read through the whole thing. Planning to take another PR practice test over the weekend and a few sections out of BB. Hopefully I see some improvement especially in CR and Math. Just a quick update. Keep working hard guys!

Do any of you recommend prep books for solely the math section? I’ve heard about Gruber’s, SAT Math Bible, and Dr. Chung’s, but I’m not sure which to get.

@slytherclaw12 there’s so many controversy over Chung, Gruber, and math bible as some people says they helped then tremendously but some say its crap. I think though that a lot of it depends on your score in math right now as some books might be helpful if you are already scoring high while some might be for the lower scorers. For example I heard that “28 SAT Math Lessons to Improve Your Score in One Month - Advanced Course: For Students Currently Scoring Above 600 in SAT Math and Want to Score 800” by Dr.Steve warner was good for people who are already proficient in math and I think this is the book I will be buying. I also heard pwn the sat is good for people in the 500’s

@tagi1998‌ Thanks so much! What about CR? I’ve seen a lot of books for vocabulary but not for passage based questions (which is what I really need help with).

@Slytherclaw12‌ I have the same question too. A lot of people seem to be saying u can’t use a prep book for passage based section idk why but the only book I hear for that part is the critical reader by Erica Meltzer. Some people says its helpful some says not. Also I heard some people like the sat prep black book for the passage cr part. Again some people said it was good some not. You might want to look into these two books cuz I can’t guarantee these books as I never tried them.
