I know there's a 500 word limit, but how many of you class of 12ers actually wrote that much? Right now I have an essay that's about 350 words, and I don't think that I could make it any longer. If I did, I think it would sound contrived. Will it hurt my chances if I don't write all the way to the limit?

Absolutely not. Stretching will hurt you more. Quality over Quantity.

thank you! : )

My longest essay is 200 words. The rest of them are around 100 words. Is that too short if the word limit is 500 words?

depends on whether or not you got the point across, i guess

What essays are you guys talking about? The personal statements on the Common App supplement are limited to 500 characters.

the nyu supplement

frozenlight, what "personal statements"? you mean the essay? i thought that could be up to 700 words or something. im just a little confused because i havent encountered anything that limits the answer to 500 characters

The questions on the NYU Common App supplement that are like "Describe a trait passed through your family" or "If you had to sing a song in the talent show, what would you sing". The regular essay (which I believe isn't part of the NYU supplement but the application) has no word limit as you attach a document.

It says 500 characters (including spaces) on the Common App.

Reading comprehension, people.

All the questions that you need to answer on the NYU supplement are limited to 500 characters, not words. Only the common app has a word limit, not the NYU supplement.

And 500 characters is about 100 words, so think about what you want to say. I recommend not repeating the question in your answer to save space. Just keep in mind that these short answers are suppose to say something about you.
