I attend a very competitive public high school on Long Island (NY) with each grade having about 180 kids. I thought it would be interesting to see where most people attend college. The list is not perfect but it contains a large enough sample size to see trends which I compiled from my yearbook and facebook. I think attending a certain high school has a large influence on your decision. For example, I highly doubt Loyola Maryland would be on any other high schools top 5 or if Boston College and NYU get 40+ applications each year at other schools. Certain competitive schools are extremely popular while others people seem not to care about at all. I am curious if other high schools have certain schools that dominate in applications.

A few interesting facts:

There are 18 Kids at Boston College but only two at Tufts.
There are 13 Kids at Loyola in Maryland but only three at U. Maryland
Every kid who went to California went to Stanford, Pepperdine, or USC.
Many kids seem to go to big cities: New York, Boston, DC, etc.
Out of USNEWS Top 20: Schools like Cornell, Vanderbilt, and Duke are very popular and each get tons of applications each year while Rice, Northwestern, and Wash U. are extremely unpopular.

I’m sure you can find other interesting trends but I am curious to what colleges dominate at your high school.

My school has some very bright students in our small honors program, and then a lot of average ones. Most are focused around schools the area, attending schools like Penn State, Slippery Rock, the community college, and Pitt. I know one girl got to Yale and another Barnard, but I haven't heard from many seniors. I think the honors students in my grade will probably aim higher than this year's seniors and go for good LACS and ivies.

As you would expect....primarily a regional distribution with the occasional kid to the south, etc. ....Around here the bulk go to Bama or Auburn, a good # to Georgia, Ole Miss, B'ham Southern.....then the Rhodes, Sewanees, etc. Only a handful up north....

All schools have colleges that are most popular, with some shifts year to year. At my school more than half the class applies to one or more of HYPS. Then the other ivies. MIT gets maybe a tenth of every class applying. Small top LACs come next. UVA is popular as is NYU and BC. This would be a typical competitive NE prep school.

Most popular colleges this year seems to be: UM, UF, UCF, Tulane, GW, BU, Indiana University, and University of Colorado at Boulders. At least 3 people or going to each of these school (More at UM, UF, and UCF).

Other colleges with more than one student going are: Georgetown, Duke, NYU, FSU.

All the others are just random. Standford (1), Penn (1), USC (1), Vassar (1), Syracuse (1), etc...

Well unfortunately Taco Bell has seen a rise in applications in the past few years so it has made admission really competitive. With the advent of the Chalupa and Gordita, high school students have been applying in droves! The administration basically tells our students not to shoot for the stars and stay with the always dependable McDonald's. On a positive note, I hear they gain a lot at McDonald's and Burger King...weight that is.

Out of classes of approximately 220 students, my school has sent something like 47 kids to Cornell in the past five years, according to our profile. That's pretty ridiculous - going to college with ten kids from you graduating class. Doesn't sound to appealing. Other notable schools that over 30 students have moved on to in the past five years include NYU, U of Michigan, SUNY Binghamton, Boston University, and Syracuse.

Ha, at least your school sends ANY kids to cornell...try going to college with 0 kids from your graduating class...I doubt my school has ever sent anyone to the Ivies (the closest thing is MIT, which is pretty good, but its only 1 kid)

Yes, we've heard of W. Coast schools. Stanford is the only one, right? So the most interesting thing to me is that every year we have a speaker from the UCs come to our school. I never gave it much thought until I came on CC where UCs are so popular. Lots of kids (18%) at our school are from California, yet year after year not one kid has gone to a UC!! What's up here?
