The top 50 tech colleges in the country - new list

I always like these kind of things.

But in any case…and this was based on a poll by those in the industry.

The top 5
MIT
Cal Tech
Stanford
Carnegie Mellon
Georgia Tech

About what you’d expect. Really, the top 20 on the list are all good, though.
This is another ranking where #6 and #17 (really, all schools from #3 to #20) could easily switch places switch places with each other.

Yes, but so can a degree from a school not in that list like San Jose State, since large well known companies tend to recruit widely.

@ucbalumnus, yes, but the top 20 or so on that list have more national reputations.

Wow Business Insider readers! I’m sure they can assess the quality of a school since these people surely have the expertise needed to evaluate the program strengths of Purdue versus San Francisco State.

They’d be much better off asking Engineering/CS school deans and Engineering/CS executives…

This ranking isn’t too bad, but it seems to rely too much on the opinion of “outsiders” and on SAT scores. UIUC at #20, Purdue at #21 and UT-Austin at #25 while Harvard at #8, Duke at #9, Yale at #14 and Vanderbilt at #22 are all outliers.

Yawn.

I like this list but agree with @Alexandre that these 3 (UIUC at #20, Purdue at #21 and UT-Austin at #25) should be higher up… slight bias towards well known names/privates.

UW is lower than many schools. Doesn’t look right.

Yeah… Wisconsin should be higher also. (assuming that is the UW you’re referencing, DrGoogle)

UW, I was referring to Washington.

Shouldn’t UMass Amherst be on that list?

Yeah there are some problems with this list. From what I’ve read, some of the top schools like Duke and Yale are really slacking on CS when compared to other smaller names. UW should be much higher (at least top 10), as should Rice. Also RPI’s ranking is definitely too high. But it is a pretty decent rough outline I’ll admit.

@bringit1, I don’t see why RPI “is definitely too high”. They’re a strong engineering school, like many others.

I think the title is CS but then it may mix in engineering. I think the ranking would have been different for CS vs engineering.

@PurpleTitan It certainly is a good school but I definitely wouldn’t put it above UPenn, UW, Rice, Columbia, UIUC, USC, or Northwestern.

@bringit1, as I have said before, rankings may give an illusion of vast difference when there is none or little. IMO, #3-#20 on that list are interchangeable in their ordering.

And why would you say USC engineering is better than RPI?

@bringit1 Duke and Yale are both investing very heavily in their engineering schools and are already reaping the benefits.

There is a reason they invest heavily in engineering schools is perhaps their programs are not quite there yet.
