The Ultimate Supply List for Boarding School

I don’t find out about my roommate until I get there!
And after reading my student handbook and the orientation and preseason athletes schedule (from the 4th through the 11th, for Choate), here is something I desperately will need but never put on any of my lists!

QUARTERS!

Even if you have the laundry service (I don’t), it is helpful to have quarters for an emergency load of laundry. If you have a game and forgot to send in your uniform, or you desperately need to wear a certain jacket or something, quarters rock.

You’re back, Saer! Good luck at preseason :)

What are some “uncommon” things you put in your lists, if at all?

Uncommon? Hmm… My stuff is pretty basic, but I’d definitely recommend trial or travel size laundry detergent and fabric softener sheets… I’m on a laundry focused path, recently!!

:D I’m glad I’m back!

Hm…is anyone bringing their cell phones or are they just using their landlines?

i’m bringing my cell phone and i think most other kids will too…

Bring your cell phone. Everyone will use them to keep in touch, send texts, etc. My daughter never used her landline.

Do you think that the cell phone might cause too many distractions?

Definitely bring a cell phone. I have two siblings at BS and they both use them like crazy, especially at bigger schools with looser cell rules.

where are people buying duvet/ comforter covers? I just need the cover and the places I’ve looks have boring neutral colors. I don’t mind PB teen except that its a tad expensive. Ikea I’ve tried along with crate&barrel.

Target, Kohls, JC Penny, ummm etc.

is there anywhere this list has been compiled??

It hasn’t been updated in a while, if that’s what you mean…

Updated!

Wow this is alot of stuff to buy. I am glad I have a whole year before I start buying.

Awesome thread! Loving it! <3

I have a friend that goes to Hotchkiss, and I’m transferring there in the fall, and he says not to bring a bunch of posters and stuff because they have a huge poster sale on the second day. Just a heads up if you’re going there.

Also, if you have a laptop, speakers for your laptop are always a good idea. Listening to youtube videos or even watching movies on your laptop can be pretty hard sometimes in a dorm unless you make it kind of loud.

A lamp for your closet could also be a good idea. I had a black curtain on my closet sophomore year and I forgot a lightbulb for my closet light, and I had to dress in blackness every morning, either because I didn’t want to turn on the light to wake my roommate, ot if the light was already on, she was awake and I had to have the curtain closed to change my underwear.

Speaking of, if your closet doesn’t have a curtain or door already, bringing a rod and curtain for it is immeasurably helpful.

I’ve been wondering about that, do people usually change in their closet or something?

It depends on the person, and how self conscious you are. I generally changed my underwear in my closet, but everything else I would just change in my room somewhere. As time goes on, living in a dorm, you usually get less and less self-conscious, especially about changing in front of other people and towel walking and things. By the end of my first term, I didn’t care about going to someone’s room in my underwear to borrow a dress.

How many people usually share a bathroom? (I know that is off-topic, sorry!)

I am dont consider myself super super self conscious but I wouldn’t go to someones dorm with just underwear on.
