The Ultimate Supply List for Boarding School

After my first year far away from home, I can give some adequate ideas and tips of what to actually pack. This is coming from a guy’s view so I’ll try to make it pretty universal. These are only a few things I felt were worth touching on since just about everything has been covered in this thread!

Make your room your own! I know it’s said a lot in this thread but it cannot be stressed enough. Posters, scarfs, flags, photos, license plates, christmas lights, leis, signs, a mirror, maybe a calendar, and a white board or bulletin board if theyre allowed. Dont let the parents choose though; it’s the child’s room, let them choose what they want.

Clothing- breaking this into two parts
a. Diversity of clothes is big. You have to have more then dresscode and athletic clothes. Bring stuff to hang out in. Most importantly, bring some things that are a little crazy or wild! I can’t tell you how many times this year I was wishing I would’ve brought crazier or wackier clothes! You never know when you’ll need them.
b. Bring clothes for the in between phases of fall and winter and of winter and spring. Long sleeves, casual sweaters, flannels if youre bold enough, and Timberland boots (for guys) are all essential.

SNACKS - these will keep you alive and sane

@puckrunningbooks Would Indian clothes and Halloween costumes count for the wacky part? Because other than that, I’ll have to do more shopping…

There are often things to dress up FOR in some whacky way-- disco dance, Halloween, other theme dance, etc. But, at least at my son’s school, they usually make a thrift store run shortly before these events to help out-- silly and super cheap. Still, if you have something already, you could bring it. And don’t forget at least a couple dress up/ party clothes kind of things.

@ionlyliketheweb It’s not bad at all. You’re young and it’s OK to dream. It will keep you going through whatever lies ahead.

Although you might want to inquire B-)

Except to hang up blazers, avoid bulky hangers. At most schools, closet space is VERY limited.

Would a beanbag or maybe a tiny couch be helpful?

bumpppp

POSTERS AND PICTURES!!! I’d say maybe bring some dvds and games, although there won’t be all that much time for that…

sorry I don’t know how to quote, but I find it so funny. Things were def different in 2007

Omg…I just realized, this thread is nearly 8 years old!

But it’s still used every year!

Lol @whimsicalwhims has the same avatar as bonjourhello!

Are you guys planning on renting a U- Haul truck? That’s way too much stuff for a small room you’ll be sharing with another student ( maybe two students!) . Pack smart ( think lean and mean) . Your parents can always ship or bring the kitchen sink later if you have the space.

In the beginning, it’s always a good idea to stick to the school’s What to Pack List. Your roommate(s) will thank you.

Also, instead of dvd’s just get a Netflix account.
