I'm an incoming freshman (class of '15) and I'm having a little trouble figuring out where exactly to live. I want a social environment, such as what I've been hearing about the units, but have also recently learned about private dorm housing and they look significantly better than the units. Two ones that i'm interested in are telegraph commons and Westminster house. Can anyone who has stayed in the units or private dorms pitch in some pros and cons. I've heard telegraph commons is under new management and has recently renovated it's rooms. In addition, how would I get a meal plan if I lived in these private dorms. thanks cc.

Meal plans are available from [Cal Dining](http://caldining.berkeley.edu/meal_plans_offcampus.html) or the [Berkeley Student Co-op](http://berkeleystudentcooperative.org/meal-contracts).

awesome possum

Here’s the thing: Unit 3 is supposed to be considered the most “social” dorm but I kind of wished I had lived in Unit 1. All of my friends were there for some reason and I feel like the atmosphere there was different. People seemed more mature but I mean it varies. And it depends on who you get as floormates.

I think choosing the units or the other two options are both win win situations. If you know you cannot stand another person living with you 24 hours, I would really consider telegraph commons or westminister. But if you DO want a single, I’d act fast because they go fast. At TC/westminister, you might meet less freshmen though, so if you’re looking to meet a bunch of freshmen, then I’d go with regular housing. Hope that helps!

ah that does help bbb360. i figured that maybe more non-freshman would stay in at TC/westminister. How’s the food near unit 3 and unit 1. also how are the rooms in TC and Westminster.

Personally, I like the dining commons lol but that’s usually not the case for most people. If you end up not liking it too much, there’s always GBC. And you can’t really go wrong there…they have sandwiches like subway but better and cheeseburgers, etc. I’ve never seen TC/West. but I have friends who live in TC and they really like it. It’s newer but make sure you decide fast if you want to live at TC and sign the contract to get the room you want. unless of course you don’t care. but there are some pretty dreadful rooms facing a wall basically if you look out the window (facing a building 10 feet away without sunlight).

Also, freshmen DO stay there but it’s less common. But the upperclassman are just as friendly. The only thing I’d be worried about is if they would still talk to me after graduating lol but I’m sure they would if they’re good enough friends. And I’d wonder if they’d want to hang out with me but it really depends on the people. Generally, the people I know at TC are really nice despite their age and your age.

Westminster House is a dorm and it is very spacious and nice. They have a nice social community and it is a very welcoming atmosphere. There are non-residential meal plans and you will be able to use campus dining or eat at all the many places in the city there are to eat at. There are many freshmen at Westminster house. They sold a lot of rooms on Cal Day.
