I have been accepted to the University of Iowa after my application was reconsidered by the admissions committee. I love the school despite the out of state tuition. I want to major in Communications/Journalism and the university is known for that major. I have won scholarships that have added up to 15,000 dollars and I am applying to more. After financial aid I have to pay 20,000 to attend. But besides that. I wondered how will it be for a black female to attend a predominantly white university?. I don’t have any issues with white ppl. I am not ghetto or loud. I actually am well spoken and classy. Would it be hard for me to date? How will I be treated?
The university of Iowa is predominantly white, as an African American female, will I have any issues
you need to post this question on the U of Iowa forum.
And perhaps on the parents forum as well.
“I don’t have any issues with white ppl. I am not ghetto or loud. I actually am well spoken and classy.”
And what is it that you understand yourself to be intimating in that passage?
The issues you will have anywhere you go are the ones you walk into the room with.
20k per year? Or total for 4 years?
U of Iowa is NOT worth 20k A YEAR in loans. Please reconsider, if this is the case.
As for your being a black female, my stepdaughter attended U of Iowa over a decade ago. The kids there are pretty liberal, for the most part (as are most 4-year universities) and I highly doubt your being AA would be an issue.
I agree that you should ask your question on the Iowa forum.
I’m more concerned about the financial side of this, for you. Please tell us that 20k is for four years, total. (Even then I question your doing that. Did you apply to cheaper schools? What state do you live in?)
Your generation does not care about race, you parents generation mostly pretends/are too polite to care, and your grandparents generation are just spouting stories from the past. You will have no issues at Iowa. I would be more concerned as a single woman (watch out at parties and walking late at night at any university) - than a person of color. Iowa people are rather warm hearted and pleasant as a group and don’t respond much to what they perceive as problems of larger states.
Also, try the AA board.
For example,
Watch UI Youtube videos to get a sense of the school to see if you would feel comfortable there.
I agree that is a lot to pay. What are your stats maybe we can help you find a comparable school for less.
Re #4
Probably the most underestimated crime hazard at college is getting drunk at parties. Specifically, sexual predators look for victims in such situations, and may add to the drunkenness by adding drugs to victims’ drinks. The risk of fights and accidents is also higher.
