The Castilian is quieter for off-campus dorms, but it's also a dump.

You are going to a party school, and as there is less regulation at the off-campus dorms the students there like to have more "extracurricular activities."

Goodal-Wooten is very quiet from what I've heard, but they also don't offer meal service so you'd have to use BevoBucks to eat elsewhere or rely on fast food and Ramen.

You could always just go to the library to study...

just to let you know it's probably going to be hard to study in your room no matter where you are staying. It's a college. You are going to have drunk kids on Tuesday nights in your hall, kids playing their music too loud, kids having loud conversations at 3 AM.

That's why they have study lounges and libraries.

If you want a nice place to stay off campus, then go to Towers and Dobie. Both are party dorms, but pretty much every dorm at UT except Honors and Simkins and Goodall Wooten are party dorms (and people party there too, it's just known for being quieter).

Do not base your room decision on whether you think it will be quiet. I think you will be miserable that way. Pick your dorm on what seems the nicest and most convenient and most affordable to you. Every dorm has quiet study areas, you can study there. You can go to one of the 10+ libraries. You can go to a coffee shop. You can go to the Joynes Room if you are an honors student.

Don't just pick your dorm on study opportunities. I think you will be disappointed where ever you go.

My son lives at Towers and he has had no problem studying. When he needs quiet study time, he goes to the business school library, but I know that he studies in his dorm room as well. The walls are thick, the living area is what is adjacent to the hall, and the rooms are farther away. He just holes up in his room and tells his suitemates to be quiet. Luckily, they are all in difficult majors as well, so they don't act like jerks.

i live in the honors dorm and can tell you its no more quiet than towers. towers is fine for the most part, the only way you'll have a problem with noise is from your suitemates if they're being loud. the guys who live next to me in the honors quad are loud as hell, stay up all night playing video games and techno music.

the only thing about towers is that it costs more. if your parents will pay for it, its worth it.

bumping this thread for current opinions –
I think my son got his housing deposit in on time to get into the honors dorms. I think he paid the deposit around the end of Nov., first of Dec. He had his housing contract confirmation by Dec. 8th.
However, bc of merit scholarships + outside scholarships, he will be able to afford University Towers, if he wants to live there.
Which would you current students recommend and why?

Towers is a dump, completely and totally. The rooms themselves are fine, but if you want the prevailing smell of beer and **** to be what your son smells daily, then house him at Towers.

If he’s not intending on going Greek I wouldn’t even consider Towers. It’s out of the way and getting run down. If he’s going to pledge, it’s a better idea–a lot of freshman Greeks live at Towers, and it’s convenient to all of the houses except for Delt. But it isn’t a great environment to study at at all–it’s the quintessential party dorm.

I really wanted to live at Towers before I was a freshman. Now, having been here a year, I can’t express how happy I am that I didn’t. I’m in the Quad, and while it isn’t the most exciting place on earth, I would absolutely recommend it over Towers in a heartbeat.

Visit all the private dorms yourself and see which one fits you best. Towers isn’t so pretty. Dobie and Castilian are the best options – obviously I’m here at Castilian now (from my other posts you can gather that info) and it’s by FAR the cleanest dorm in all of west campus.
