The Value of a Marketing Degree Today

I'm wondering if a marketing degree is of any true value today in this new digital age. I'm interested in earning a business degree, but I'm conflicted on my concentration.
I design and create websites on the side - would a marketing degree even be that influential in this field? I see many successful people who've jumped into these creative/digital industries - essentially, unless you want to work your way up in a big corp, marketing degrees aren't necessarily required or looked highly upon as other concentrations.

So what do some of you guys out there think and can contribute? Just throwing this out there...

Personally, I'm trying to factor in my love for my web design business, but I just don't know the value of marketing for me - I'm thinking a concentration like Management Info Systems would be much better if I ever stop doing web design and have to satisfy some big biz with my resume.

You may want to look at a major such as informatics (google Rutgers and informatics for an idea what it may involve). You will get into usability a bit more and that is probably more your area of focus than MIS. You can always add a business minor. Also, another important skill is writing.

I don’t know if Marketing degrees were ever of high value, they (just as the Business Management degree) are becoming like the traditional liberal arts degree due to the general broad aspect.

Do you setup and design basic websites, or more advanced looking websites with higher complicated gadgets, formats, etc? What’s your career plan overall?

It would seem as though something in Information Technology with a variety of IT certifications would be a great fit if you see yourself working in an IT role going forward. Designing websites is more like a generic “graphic design” specialization, but depending upon what all you do for the management of the website, this can cross into a number of different areas. For example, instead of just designing the website you can do fraud management, e-commerce marketing management, video marketing design, SEO, press release creation, and other inter-connected aspects of marketing on the web.
