Hi there. I'm considering going to Vandy, but my real #1 choice is Duke. I've been waitlisted there and accepted into Vandy. Now, if I get accepted off the waitlist at Duke, I will definately attend.

So my question here is, how binding is the deposit at Vandy? I know I know, I read on the acceptance letter that it says I will have to withdraw all other offers if i decide to attend. Are they really that strict about this, and is it really impossible to keep a waitlisted school after saying yes to vandy?

That's hysterical...I was accepted to Duke and waitlisted at Vandy...I'm a little bit WTH right now...especially since I got three rejections today...

At many schools, waitlists are polite rejections (although it varies from school-to-school). Most students at Vanderbilt wanted to be here, if you are not going to be happy here -- don't come.

I was waitlisted at Duke and in at Vandy, however Vandy is my #1 choice... I'm not sure on their "strictness" so I would recommend calling the admission staff and asking them. Everytime I call they are very helpful.

If you pay your deposit to Vandy, you are not "obligated" to attend (like you would be if you did binding ED). However, you will lose the deposit.

My D's friend accepted a place on Duke's WL last year & got a call in mid to late June (maybe even July?) with an admissions offer (she decided not to go ... she had already settled on another school by that time).

When you get waitlisted at a school, they TELL you to put your deposit down at another school. Each of my 4 schools that waitlisted me all said that. So, it is obvious that you can put the deposit down and stay on the waitlist. However, you will lose that deposit if taken off the waitlist.
