A friend of mine was recently waitlisted at uMich and I'm not really sure what that means in terms of her chances of eventually getting accepted. I know at Ivy league schools there's usually about a waitlist of 400 or so students and maybe 30 get off. What are the relative amounts at uMich? Is the waitlist a death sentence?

Unfortunately, I don't think Michigan has admitted anyone from the waitlist in the past few years.

She also said there was a regular waitlist and an extended waiting list. Does anyone no the difference or if this is a new policy? If an applicant were to send in additional materials and write a great letter about how he/she really wanted to go to the school in order to get off the waitlist, do you think that would have any bearing or be enough to get off the waiting list?

yeah what is the difference between the regular waitlist and the extended waitlist---which list recieves the available slots if they go to the waitlist??

can someone help?! i heard that last year there was a "highest priority" waiting list? what is this "extended" business about?! someone who knows FOR SURE...help!

There is one waitlist, and my friend spoke to a Mich ADCOME that said they MOST likely won't luck at it.

I think in the past, in some years, they have told some candidates they are on the highest-priority waitlist, or something like that. Meaning they'd be the first ones contacted if U-M went to the wait list.

I don't think they made that distinction this year. There is one wait list.

From what I hear, the yield this year is over 50%, so it is unlikely that many students on the wait list will be admitted. In the last 2 or 3 years, Michigan has accepted 0 students from the waitlist...out of over 10,000 such students. This year, Michigan put many students on the waitlist, so a couple may be admitted, but it is not likely.

If you were deferred or are on the wait list, there's very little chance that you'll be accepted at this point. Time to get happy about wherever else you were accepted!

Not sure how reflective this is, but there were about 5500 freshmen last year that went to UM. On CollegeBoard.com, it says there are 6,037 freshman (for this upcoming year?). If so, I imagine space would be incredibly tight.

I think those are last year's numbers. I don't think they reported this year's number's yet.

They haven't reported this year's numbers yet, but "word on the street" is that it's going to be another large class. Smaller than last year, but larger than expected.

When I look at this year's yield numbers I cackle like a crazy woman. It doesn't make sense. I guess Michigan is a "hot" school right now, a phenomenon I haven't ever really understood (but it clearly does exist!).

It is pretty amazing. I only see a small section of the larger picture, but from the UAE, 14 students of the 24 admitted decided to go to Michigan. That's a 60% yield rate. 4 of those students chose Michigan over Ivys and several others chose Michigan over schools like Cal, Duke, Johns Hopkins and NYU (Stern).

For Fall 1998 to 2000 they say they use a wait list - but they provide no data on how many applicants were on it , or how many, if any were admitted.
