**The Waitlisted-by-WashU-and-therefore-losing-all-hope-of-going-to-HYPS Club**

dang....I'm not over-qualified...but my $30000 fam income prob had something to do with this

Hmm...I wonder where the whole "overqualified" wait-listing rumor ever came from. I've definitely hear it before and even in earlier years people have complained about this. I hope it's not accurate (though I wonder what its basis is) because now I feel anxious about my acceptance. Geez, college stress is sooo irrational.

And to be perfectly honest, I never showed much interest besides talking to their college rep who visited my school and signing up for the mailing list.

My daughter is wait-listed and I do believe that WashU was looking for applicants to show mega interest in the school. Here's why I believe that.................My D went for a local interview about 6 weeks ago. There were 54 kids intervied that day, each one spent about 10 minutes with the interviewer. My D came out 45 minutes later. The woman who interviewed her said she would give her the highest rating possible and thought she would be "a perfect fit at WUSTL." BUT, she needed to know from D if she would accept if she got in. D was honest and told her that if she gets in we will visit during spring break in April. I don't know if the woman was convinced that this was true (but it was!) and she said that 'her reputation for recommending a qualified student would be on the line if the student didn't accept.' If D had jumped up and down and told her that WUSTL was her first choice I believe she would have gotten in.

Still waiting on 8 more schools, so...............

I want to joiN! waitlisted@washu

2260 sat's 4.1 gpa lots of ECs and 500+ comm serv hrs.

probably waitlisted b/c
1) international applicant
2) 30k family income

tell me I'm correct on that above statement. because I think I am.

oh well. this thread like made my day. my school's valedictorian got waitlisted too

Waitlisted here too at washu

SAT I: 2310
SAT II: 780, 760, 760
ACT: 35
GPA: 3.98 UW/ 4.32 W

300+ Community Service Hours, HOSA National Qualifier, Ranked Science Quiz Bowl, Debate, Guitar/Piano/Harmonica (play at many clubs, even opened up for B.B. King once).

I think being international and asking for aid contributed some to my decision, especially during the economic times. Still though, mad respect for those who got in. I liked washu, not necessarily sure i would have gone there, but as others in this thread have already said, acceptance boosts confidence. No one can help but compare acceptance/waitlist patterns from one high caliber school to the next.

Deferred by Yale, waitlisted by WashU. Those were my top two choices. FML.

My D was waitlisted. The letter said something about accepting the status. Is there student who actually agreed to be on a waitlist?

Hi all,
I'm here to join the club.
Firstly, thank you all for this comforting new thread.
Being waitlisted is totally the new and 'in' thing.

BUT BEFORE I GO ON:
1) For those who say the acceptance rate is 6%, you forgot to account for the yield. The yield last year was 34%. So technically their admit rate should be approximately 16.5%.

2) There seems to be trends we can see - from all those likelies (Yale and Stanford Acceptances, Dartmouth and Columbia likelies - AND GET WAITLISTED HERE AT WUSTL) and someone's interview comment - I have (or would like to) conclude that it seems that WashU IS TRYING to revamp their reputation - by increasing the yield (from a pitiful 34% to at least 40%+ - FYI Cornell which was ranked similar according to US News had its yield close to 50% last year). Since WashU is so good at advertising their university - ie. sending out two trillion pamphlets and giving out money for free (well inviting three million prospectives to their campuses) - I am not surprised if they used this strategy to 'window dress' themselves

3) For those who are waitlisted, what choice is this school on your list? And for those who are accepted, is WashU the top choice on your list? If Point 2 is right, then it seems like WashU is really trying to do some strategic admissions. - Okay, this school is my 6th choice :P

4) ANYONE ON EARTH GOT REJECTED? (and if you wouldn't mind telling, are your statistics similar/slightly below/above the average waitlisted applicant?

Anyone agree with me?

I totally agree. My D stats were exceptional, like most who applied, I guess. She got waitlisted. Originally, WASHU was not her first choice, mainly because she did not know about it. Junior year, she started to receive zillion of brochures from WASHU, went to visit, and decided to make it her first choice. However, during our visit, I saw a lot of little thing that kind of bugged me, and felt she would not be a happy there. However, she applied, and I believe money was the reason she got waitlisted. So, thank God for being poor :)

The stats of many who were waitlisted are truly amazing. I very much doubt that this waitlist is indicative of other results.

D was admitted, but this comes on the back of her recent disappointment at being denied for all of the WashU merit scholarships she applied for, so it's been a bit of a roller coaster. We'll have to wait for the aid package to see whether we can make it work.

Kansasdemocrat, re: your comment that you would likely have accepted a WashU offer over your Stanford EA accept, please ping me quickly before you come to your senses. Maybe we can work something out!

Vented in another tread.

May the Mississippi wash Wash.U. into the Gulf. D. wasted NMF "first choice" designation.

fyi--- my son got an early admit (likely) letter from Stanford and was waitlisted at Wash U.
So I don't believe you should use Wash U's decision as a reliable indicator of what HYPS will do.

D is waitlisted, just like the rest of the WUSTL applicants, but I have a question..........Who in their right mind will wait until after May 1st to see if they will actually be admitted??? Don't most kids just 'move on' and choose a school they were actually accepted to?

@jnrsmom: they are precisely playing the "Don't most kids just 'move on' and choose a school they were actually accepted to?" mentality - so those kids who actually WANT to be on the waitlist WANTS (and probably have wustl as their top choices) to go to Wustl. - so just in case they identified the candidate as 'not so interested in WUSTL hence waitlist them - but infact - he/she is very interested in WUSTL'

This might also explain the high no. of waitlisted candidates.

all waitlists operate this way; May 1st is national response day; waitlists cannot pull until they know who is coming from the accepted list.....If I recall correctly, Wash U starting pulling from the waitlist earlier than May 1 last year....ST2 may remember better than I can,,,, but, yes, students do put themselves on the waitlist, commit to other schools on May 1 and then change their choices afterwards (even up until the late summer)...

Yes, you lose your deposit at school #1, but this is discussed in detail on last year's threads......

Thanks for the interpretation! Wash U was in the middle of D's list, so she is fine with being waitlisted. She is not reading this thread like I am, but I must say that I really can't believe how MANY kids were WL. Haven't seen that many actual acceptances!

I don't know how much demonstrated interest and need or lack thereof played in the decision to waitlist a student. My son visited and applied for several merit scholarships-- he was very interested and showed it, I think. The school also knows our EFC is higher than the COA. Yet, he was waitlisted by WUSTL even though, presumably, he has adequate stats, essays and recs to be admitted, since he received the early admit letter from Stanford.
Maybe the WUSTL ad coms just didn't like his essays or didn't like what they had for lunch that day-- we'll never know. I don't think there is anyway to make sense of this process. There is so much subjectivity involved. However, I believe that the students who were waitlisted by WUSTL are likely to get acceptances at highly ranked schools where they will be happy.

BigG - "May the Mississippi wash Wash.U. into the Gulf. D. wasted NMF "first choice" designation. "

You can still change the "first choice" b4 April 1st. WUSTL was my son's 11th choice in his NMF. just kidding;-)
