**The Waitlisted-by-WashU-and-therefore-losing-all-hope-of-going-to-HYPS Club**

And I agree that Washu is trying too hard to climb the US News rankings. It's shooting itself in the foot, waitlisting the best.

Did everyone who signed up for mailing list all got accepted? I signed up for mailing list and got viewbooks, etc.

That's a silly question, of course they didn't all make it. I can understand resenting the university in letting some qualified applicants go, but it is by no means "waitlisting the best." I can assure you those that have been accepted are more than qualified. No need to make such erroneous statements...

Eff my life... waitlist! I probably shouldn't have said in the interview that I at first only came for the free trip... should have applied for the ervin scholarship like they said... should've applied ed... should've treated them like a school I love, instead of safety material. I'm so stupid. Oh well, Brown, por favor!

acolombianp28: Calm down calm down. I got accepted, but I was just curious. Chillax ~

Sorry for the confusion FB lalaland, only my first comment was directed at you, and not in any sardonic manner. I actually meant the rest of it towards Silvykins. Congrats on your acceptance, by the way!

waitlisted also

/* read carefully. 1400 spots & 23000 applicants. */

Should say 1400/yield vs. 23,000.

Is their yield=0.25? Then they should admit 5,600

This year, I bet their yield will drop below 0.15. So, if they accepted 3,700 or so first round, then they will eventually dig down another 5,600 into the wait list.

acolombianp28 - Most of the top schools could fill their freshman class at least 2 or 3 times over with very similair quality applicants. Most of these schools attract a self selecting pool of applicants. Unfortunately these schools are not able to offer admission to everyone that may be qualified. As a result some very qualified applicants are not offered admission. This is not a reflection on an applicant and often these applicants are accepted at other schools of equal quality, where they may be a better fit.

Unfortunately it is a difficult time for people not offered admission. The natural human reaction is to search for justification, anger and often bitterness. For that reason it is best to ignore some of the negative reaction and give people an opportunity to vent. I am sure that many of these people will end up in a situation that may well be a better fit in the end. Those still interested in WashU should take advantage of a WL offer and then look to suplement their original application. For other it is best to move on to alternative options that in most cases work out as well or even posibly better. Acceptance or not by one school is not an indication or prediction for possibly action by another school. As stated previously, most top schools would love to accept all qualified applicants. Unfortunately there are space limitations, so that scenario is not realistic.

im sorry.. I couldnt not respond to this thread especially because it was hookem who started it. I completely understand that you all are allowed to feel disappointed and to vent your frustrations, but I must correct a few things.

Hookem- you consistently bash WashU and St Louis on this thread, yet on others you appear oh so keen on wanting to get in to WashU. Furthermore, I know for a fact that you filled out a visitor's review on WashU and gave it raving remarks on how nice and helpful everyone was... 5 stars for virtually everything, even commenting on the upscale neighborhoods around it so you are completely contradicting yourself (not the [dead place with unmotivated student surrounded by a ghetto].) Please stop thinking you are "above" WashU. Once your stats get into a certain bracket, you are there and the recs, essays, and ECs really come into play and they choose some of the students. There are more qualified students than there are spots, so I truly dont believe WashU rejects "overqualified" applicants (whether or not it was you who said this). There just isnt enough room. Plus, WashU is ranked above or the same by USNews as some of the previously mentioned colleges which are "better." You and I are virtually the same applicant (after someone asked me to post some of my stats on the "When are we notified?" page, you said "I had 'better' stats than that." I was a little annoyed but didnt say anything, so I guess this is a little karma for you.)

Everyone else- you're right... this waitlist has no reflection on your decisions for other colleges. HOWEVER, that is not because you are "overqualified." It is partly because each school has different admissions officers who have good and bad days or take a particular liking to an applicant's file. Each school is looking for certain things in applicants. Perhaps some Ivies will accept you guys and good luck to you all. I hope you are all happy where you get in. I just want to say that WashU is right there with all the rest of the schools in academics and an overall positive student experience, and that when talking about the top 15 schools, there are very very few things as "overqualified students." Some of you have even said you would have chosen it over Ivies (the exact same thing as me) and perhaps some of you will be offered a spot from the waitlist. Please remember that you applied for a reason (and not as a safety because WashU is not a safety school) and dont bash it until you know for sure that you are perfectly happy with wherever you decide to go. Thats all I have to say... I think.

Who cares? People who get rejected (or wait listed) have a right to vent. no matter how petty or contradictory.

of course, leave it to ST2 to say what I was trying to, but much more eloquently. :)

You're completely right, ST2. I acknowledge there are some very qualified applicants who were waitlisted, and they should get to vent. I'm sure I would too in their position. And again, FB lalaland, no offense was intended. I'm sure everyone here will ultimately end up somewhere where they have a good match.

^^^, there were many qualified applicants who did not get in!

What I mean by qualified is HYP material.

^^^^^^^^

Yep, I wouldn't be surprised if WU's yield dropped as much as 40-50% during the current cycle.

Many people that were highly qualified were waitlisted, there is no doubt about it. However, nobody got waitlisted because he or she was "overqualified" for one of the top universities in the nation.

waitn184 - You are absolutely right. All of the freshman class at WashU is "HYP material" as you refer to in your post. In order to admit all "qualified" applicants WashU would have to increase the size of the freshman class to at least 4,000 - and then it would not be the same WashU that present students are so passionate about. I know many may not believe it now - but believe it or not - it usually works out for the best in the end. I also believe that the reaction of many dissapointed people is absolutely normal and to be expected. At the same time the defensive reaction by those who were accepted should also be understood. Many have achieved their "dreams" - and it is always dangerous to attack "dreams". Acceptance does not make them better people, only possibly a better fit in this situation. People should always remember to never burn a bridge unless they are absolutely positive that they will never need it. Life has a funny way of turning sometimes. Tolerance on both sides would be the best scenario.

Rejected Stanford SCEA, Accepted WashU.

3.9 GPA/ 4.6 WGPA
35 ACT
730 PHYSICS 800 MATH

Captain of sports, President of a very active NHS, lots of community service...

Guess I was just right for WashU but not good enough for Stanford, eh?

"9 in 10 girls in California are hot. The tenth goes to Stanford."

Eat it! Mwahaha

ST2, good advice. I guess I am reacting out of anger. I did expect to get an acceptance to WUSTL. I guess I did not show enough interest toward the school. I just hope I get into one of my top choices (WUSTL was one of them). One down, three more to go :(.

At least I wasn't rejected, there is always hope. Congrats to those who got in, and good luck to the other 100,000 applicants on the wait list.
