good luck to all of you with your other decisions!

I got waitlisted too!

I'm pretty sure I'm not getting off. I'm going to forget about Duke. :(

Insane - last year they took 100/120 which was way more than usual. Usually it's anywhere from a handful to as high as 75 I think the letter said. It's certainly tough, but it is possible, not hopeless. I know several people here who were waitlisted and now attend. Final grades could help, although I think it's a bit of luck... they want to build a class so it depends on who matriculates and who doesn't. Showing interest certainly would help. Even if they only take one person off, it could be you.

Someone can have my spot...I'm not going.

I went for Pratt, waitlisted. Ahh shrugs but, JHU acccepted, so I guess that's okay.

Anyone know anything about the waitlist size?

A friend of mine last year got a call a few days after her online "wait list" and they quickly moved her into the accepted category. Don't know if it has to do with projections and fallout from last year's scandal. I would think Duke doesn't really have a clue what their yield rate is going to be this year. There were not that many in the early group (it was down 25%) willing to commit... so the wait list might not be the worst place to be, and also it might be why it is so big.

EVERYBODY.... come vent about being waitlisted on my facebook group (it helps)

p.s. special shout out to bevans who i know will see this

Got wait-listed at Duke, Pratt should be thee easiest school to get into. You only have about 3500 applicants and 1900 admitted from there. Anyways, I guess being and international student and all, I'm lucky to even be on the wait list. Ivies had a field day wait-listing students, got rejected by Cornell and Princeton though I got wait-listed again my Penn. BY the I've been told that in order to get off the wailist you have to keep showing interest in the College and also send any new information that will assure of a spot once it becomes available.

The idea is that at a certain point colleges need to fill their class. They'd much rather call one kid who might be slightly-less-qualified but who they know they can get than have to send out six different letters and wait ten days each round.

So yes, promising them you'll come if they take you is a big deal. As is reasonable.

Is the waitlist binding?

I got waitlisted Duke and Cornell, rejected by Brown, and accepted by WUSTL and UW. I'm definitely not looking forward to Stanford tomorrow :(

Duke admitted 3,770 applicants this year. Of these, 470 were ED admits. The dean predicts a 41% yield.

Assuming this yield is referring to RD admits only, that gives a class size of 1823. This is way over the intended class size of 1665.

Assuming this is the overall yield, which is more likely, this gives a class size of 1546, which means that as many as 120 could be taken from the waitlist.

The waitlist is not binding. However, should you volunteer to bind yourself, that would be favorable.

Interesting... after being waitlisted from Pratt, I just found out I was accepted to BME at JHU.

Hey you know, It would really be cool if the 41% yield is for the entire class. That would give most of us who are stuck as waitlistees a chance to get admitted somewhere. -

By the way who knows what the shortest time anyone has had to wait to be admitted from the waitlist?

am not looking forward to stanford either!!! I got waitlisted by Brown.. and rejected by harvard, princeton, yale... I've applied to only 5 unis. SILLY me!!

taking my name off the list i think... i was deferred ED at columbia but just got accepted

As predicted... rejected by Stanford.
I think I'll stay on the waitlist:)

Everyone...stay on the waitlist! Whatever you do STAY ON THE WAITLIST! I was waitlisted last year (apparently like half of the 2010 class was) and did NOT want to go to JHU. I stayed on and they called me one day at school telling me I got off. Apparently they underenrolled or something and many many people were accepted off of it. Don't lose hope...

ok, so they made a mistake last year and had to look for more people of the wait list. I don't wish to be a pessimist but if indeed they had made a mistake once why should they make the same mistake again. Of course this is based on the assumption that they did make a mistake ( i hope this is confusing )

on second though if the dean expects a 41% yield, then they can't expect 1823 applicants to enroll otherwise they'll have to reject admitted students because they have a full class. On the other hand, with 1546 expected to enroll that gives them some breathing space incase the yield estimate was too low. Therefore, I think it's safe to say that if thee dean is right then we who are waitin to get admitted have a very good shot at becoming Blue Devils :D
