The Whatever--Random Medical School Stuff

LMAO!

D1 just texted me her birthday present wish list: an iron and ironing board— so she can iron her button down shirts to look more professional at clinic.

As she said “Adulthood happens.”

She should just wear scrubs.

She can’t wear scrubs to clinic to meet with patients. Against regs. Professional dress required.

@WayOutWestMom,
I bought some of these[/url”>http://www.brooksbrothers.com/womens/dress-shirts/0302,default,sc.html]these for interviews. They never ever need to be ironed. :D

Oh, I know all about no iron shirts. I bought D2 a couple for interviews, but let’s just say D1’s clothing tastes run more towards silks and fine linens than cotton.

Also Brooks Bros. are all too big on her.

Even the petite sizes? One of the reasons I shopped at BB is they had the best petite collection of any place I looked

[Women’s Petite Shirts by Brooks Brothers](http://www.brooksbrothers.com/womens/petite/shirts/0408,default,sc.html)

She doesn’t wear a petite-- she’s too tall. She’s runway model thin.

The BB non-iron shirts are a godsend. I don’t know about women’s, but in men’s they recently added new cuts and now have 4 different cuts (extra slim, slim, regular, and traditional). Maybe try again and see if there are new women’s cuts that fit her?

I recommend a new line for BB. extra slim with a sash to tie around the waist. :p

Son also needs dress shirts/slacks for rounds and clinic. He paid (I shopped) for his shirts at Lands End (on the counter sale) and take the shirts to the cleaners to be laundered. The shirts are washed and pressed with medium starch on the hanger or folded for 99 cents per shirt. They often have a coupon making them less than 75 cents per shirt. I wait until he has over 10 and take them in with a 1 day turn around.

Makes living close to home “bearable” for him.

On other news far-away girlfriend (in NYC) moved down and in with son. She was interviewing/hired by the university for admin. Salary considerations are considerably MORE here than NY so she is so very happy. As is son, so his expenses for 3rd, 4th and MBA just shrank. They were not too big before but now, boy is he doing the happy dance! Having her here eliminates all the travel, time and expense of visiting and now the are 3 of them splitting the rent and utilities. She loves his place and who doesn’t love chapel thrill! And she does love to do many of the things I do, so new playmate for ME! (son is just too busy!)

Kat

Kat - The GF is expected to have a higher income in your state than NYC? That sounds a bit shocking!

PG, she HAS a higher income than she had in NYC, seriously. And her benefits package is unbelievable, university benefits and state benefits. And her rent/utilities/subway pass shrank by thousands. She just wished she had done it sooner, they have been a couple since sophomore year in undergrad. Doesn’t take long to be vested and the commute costs for the two of them (to see each other) were starting to become a burden. He had miles left over from interviewing during med school app and those had run out.

He was taking the bus and that was long and tiring.

Shocking if you don’t know the area PG. But in some areas, besides finance although Charlotte area does compete, salaries in RTP, especially for STEM are some of the best in the area. Brother-in-law left HP in Nor Cal and did much better here. Same with sis. Again if you are familiar with the area and industry you can do VERY well here.

Kat

I know the area. I went to Clemson a quarter century ago. :p

I am just surprised someone can get more simply based on cost of living indexes piled on to the salary calculations for NYC. I have no doubt it is lot cheaper to live and one can save a bunch of money just in travel.

I know right?
She was splitting a 1 bdroom 4th floor walk-up with a room partition thingy for $1200 per month her share, so $2400 for the place. Plus utilities, food prices, subway (had no car) and other misc. She split’s son share of $375 per month (so less than $200) and $40 in utilities. The bus stops literally outside their townhouse door (1350+ square feet) and onto campus, and its FREE.

And the taxes were killing her. She receives a substantial bump in salary and like I said her healthcare benefits package alone trumps everything she had, best care around at little to no-cost. Not only did her quality of life change but her disposable income almost tripled. Granted the weather has held up its part of the bargain with all our Carolina blue skies and his place has REALLY nice amenities. She has been swimming everyday and using the fancy gym almost everyday, which is all included in the rent.

And now that she has moved her family is willing to come visit much more often. Funny how it all works out.

Kat

LandsEnd also has some very crisp cotton shirts that never need ironing…I love them.

lol…I keep forgetting that Plumazul is a girl. I think I’ll call her MsPlum from now on as a reminder.

Kat - Are they from the same undergrad school?

PG- yes they are. So her degree has turned out to be very valuable here, since there are not as many alums in our area and they are much more plentiful in NYC. As she has discovered it is very coveted at son’s current school (you know academic snobs are the academics!), teasing!

I discovered a new dry cleaners in my Craig’s listing travels, and they are charging $1.97 per piece for anything, so she saved up all her dry-cleaning and I lugged a bag of her stuff there too. She says son is spolied with all the parental attention but I do enjoy helping them out.

Anything to get grandbabies sooner! I wish.

Kat

"you know academic snobs are the academics!), "

Of course, those extra As added in the name for emphasis always help!

Kay. If my kitten ends up there, I’ll be calling for advice. Just sayin’.

"A friend of mine’s H is a surgeon and they’re paying for two kids in med school right now. "
-Well, it is not the case with some that I know. However, many with MD parents are going to very cheap / free UG and (potentially free) Med. School because parent is actually working / connected to the specific Med. School. I know several families and one has 3 kids in Med. School (the same UG / Med. School - both free or very close, while also living at home, so no additional living expances). They made sure that kids do not have student loans, they did not want them to have this negative experience that they have had themselves, one parent has actually shred this with me.
