The Whatever--Random Medical School Stuff

LOL! UNC is also D1’s list for an away rotation next year.

You’re going to be real popular soon…

Please do Curm and WOWmom. Either here or CMC. Son did a short rotation at CMC and WOW. Just wow. The students/residents/fellows ALL receive free breakfast and lunch. They have a very nice lounge just for them with juice/soda/coffee dispensers, snacks, fruit, fresh pastries and bbq. All free, every day. Son was in heaven. And its facilities are really, really nice. He has another there for OB/GYN and has a short one in Asheville. Asheville in the winter is something both the GF and I are looking forward to visiting. Its for a short period of time, so we can check it out.

CH is more chaotic and busy, something going on all the time. Son does say time flies and his shift goes by in the blink of an eye. He walks out of clinic, hops on the bus and is home in just minutes. If he drives for more off hours it is also just a few minutes away. There are so many great, cheap places to eat we can see him more often which I do like.

Completely off topic but kinda relevant going to costs I found the cleaners craig’s listing because I needed a new ofa. The 15 old beat-up sofa from my 3 boys flopping on it finally died. Living in the furniture capital of the US allows for a ton of great furniture especially used and vintage. Found a lovely, very clean and cute new sofa made right here in NC for $125. Came home that very afternoon and saw the EXACT same sofa on One King’s Lane marked “vintage” for over $3000.

Yippee! Borrowed neighbor’s wet vac and shampooed it myself to just be sure. Looks booootiful! So if you are or your kiddos are headed this way keep that in mind. Furniture and like goodies can be had here for a fraction of the price. Saves on having to move anything and you can get some great pieces here not readily available in the rest of the country. Son’s GF sold everything in NYC and just brought her clothes and playbills. He bought her some new binders to preserve all he playbills. She was thrilled.

The binders cost more than his 5-piece Ethan Allen entertainment center and bookshelves that she will keep them in.

Kat

^D. does not have time to eat out at all. Her credit card has been low (about half) since she started rotations. No time for anything and she is not done OB/GYN yet, considered one of the most busy at her school. There were no lunch/other breaks during surgery rotation, they consumed protein bars out of the white coat pockets and being thirsty was the biggest problem (on a positive note, maybe it actually solved the bathroom break problem). Surgery was never on horizon, anyway, but another specialty that was there, not there anymore, the choices are getting very limited (maybe only one, actually), getting worried…in addition to normal level which is always there for anybody whose kid is in Med. School…

Kay? Who is Kay? Sheesh. My post was directed to Kat.

Kat–is there a ring in the future?

Kat…is CMC : Carolinas Medical Center?

Kristin- son is in no hurry but I’m sure the GF would like one in the future! He’s more of a wait-and-see guy when it comes to romantic relationships. He is loyal to the very core to all his friends so she has no worries there. There are some critical issues that would need to be worked out before he takes that step…ie, he loves dogs and she is terrified, he wants a mess of kiddos and she might want 1 or 2. Their socio-economic upbringings are very different, opposite ends of the spectrum…he wants to change the world or die trying and she is content to watch him try. So we shall see.

Mom2CK- yes CMC is Carolina’s Med Center in Charlotte. All operate under the UNC umbrella but at different locations. Just like the UNC university, 1 university with 16 different campuses. During 3rd and 4th year there are 20 different locations med students can be sent to for rotations…CMC is just one of the locations, Chapel Hill another, Wilmington, Asheville…with 14 more remaining. Son has only been assigned to CH, CMC and Asheville…his majority (80%) are in CH. Some students NEVER step foot in CH if they don’t want to…some want to go back home to more rural sites, others opt for CMC for all 3rd and 4th year and there are economic incentives to do so. Some opt for Asheville (which is drop dead gorgeous) for both years.

UNC stresses its #1 slot for primary care and REALLY emphasizes it to ALL students. It is taken very seriously. And I think it drives the way the school is structured.

Kat

Well, D is now finished with both Step 2 tests. Says CS was weird but not hard. Just weird. Had to take it Philadelphia but will only miss one day of work. Now it’s back to racking up publications and getting some leadership opp’s while trying to kick start a social life.

Dad and Mom might have the flu. Or possibly the plague.

This early? We still have 95 degree temperatures.

I don’t know what the malady is. Just know I’m close to death. Whining incessantly is the only thing that helps.

;) ;)

You should try to will yourself to live at least until the last tuition bill is due.

What with the inheritance taxes and the full pay with that inheritance, Ellie May will be left penniless. :p

OTOH, this is your best chance to move in with her and demand the best medical care available.

" Whining incessantly is the only thing that helps. "

 • Do not kid yourself, just go swimming. I helps like nothing else. At least, you will feel nothing in a water, nose gets unpluged, no body pains, not scratchy throat, nothing and the colder the water, the better. I do not remember when I was sick last time, but it lasted maybe only 2 days becasue of swimming, aaah, the wonderful smell of chlorine, what could be better?..And after you finish swimming for about 1.5 hours, go for a walk, fresh air will kill the rest of whatever you have.

^^^
Hey, we don’t need doctors anymore!

Just a nice lap pool and a walking path!

We really can cut healthcare costs!

:)

Curmy…hope you and Mrs. Curmy are feeling better, soon. Sounds like you have the Crud that’s going around your state?

Miami…I like swimming, too…and floating. I love the way it can bring down your core temp on a hot day.

"Just a nice lap pool and a walking path!

Exactly the point in addtion to making you feelng much better in much shorter time. The point of going to doc. with the flu / cold is …??? Oh, yes, I remember couple experiences. The whole point was to get severe stomach situation (from very common antibiotics), resulting in multiple emergency visits, IV’s, and in my case, I was actually admitted for few days, my stomach was very much out of wack. I wish I just went swimming.

Curm, I wish you and Mrs. get better soon! If not, try my method.

Does anyone have Curm’s address? I may need to drive over and check on him.

Haven’t checked CC in quite a while! Thoughts on some past posts on this thread:

D is a M3 at our state’s medical school. She says that the school reported during some sort of meeting they had that @ 10% of each class does not take out any loans (family is paying for all 4 years).

D also likes Eddie Bauer’s wrinkle resistant/wrinkle free shirts and slacks - her daily “uniform” for clinical rotations.

MWP, Time passes so quickly, doesn’t it? It appears that not long ago, the kids were still juniors in college and we were concentating on learning what the premed life is like, and now they are MS3!

We should congratulate our kids for their job well done and we tag along for a good ride in their journey…Still remember that you posted what your oldest D did when she drove home and parked her car on the driveway the very first time in college and how often your family visited your younger D in her freshmen year.

mcat2 - You have a very good memory!

D1 is now 5 years married and in the 3rd year of her PhD! That little college freshman who had tears streaming down her face as she drove into the driveway on her first visit home after 2 weeks in college, moved half way across the country for graduate school without a second thought. She did get a little misty eyed when it was time for us to return home after our first visit to PA.

CC was so supportive and helpful with questions when D2 was looking at colleges. She made it through the first two years of MS, but it was not much fun. She is loving the beginning of the 3rd year with all the interesting clinical rotations.

You are so right about going along for the ride. I’ve just tried to hang on for dear life, help when I could and be appreciative of what a privilege it has been to be along for the journey.

MWP, I remember them because they are very touching (in a good way) stories!

Another touching story you told was that when you gave your D a ride from the airport to the home, your D told you how appreciate she was because you “allowed” her to attend a college that would cost much more.
Although I think DS thought in the same way at that time, he did not say something so “sweet” to us. However, when he told us that he likes to come home during the break (despite all the potential troubles of air travel), we were very happy and tried hard to make it happen every time.

Now he is more independent, we find that we are not as “useful” to him as before.
