The one's that you rent from the front desk of whatever residence you're in.

I'm guessing they aren't very good, but for anyone with experience with them, how fast are they/how many computers can they comfortably network?

wireless routers??...i never knew they were wireless...as for the regular router I had...it has four ports so you can hook up four computers...and its the same speed as any internet connection @ UCLA..from my experience though..they only give those out to people in triples

yeah...i'm in a triple.

i thought wireless wasn't allowed in the rooms (or that's what someone said).

do you know how much it costs to rent a router?

i think they give out their routers for free.

and microwaves 'arent allowed' either.....but itd be a hard job to count the number of people that have them.

I don't believe they have wireless routers... at least those aren't the ones that are given to people in triples. Triples are just given the regular routers as there is only ethernet ports in each room... And I don't think I've ever heard that wireless was not allowed in the dorms. I think you may have misheard what someone said. The connection to the wireless network doesn't generally extend into the rooms. However, it can be accessed in most of the resisdential lounges.

The routers they rent out to people in triples are not wireless. You can, however, bring your own wireless router to the dorms. All you need to do is take the wireless router to the STC office to get the router's MAC Address registered on the network (otherwise it won't be able to connect).

I'm planning on bringing both a laptop and a desktop with me. So do I need a regular router or a wireless router or will either work?

Either will work. But you'll probably want a wireless router unless you don't mind attaching your laptop with a wire.

do they give you something to split the 3rd ethernet cable thing since there are only 2 plugs in the room?

yeah they can give you a router. It splits up one cable into more than one port so you can plug multiple computers into it.
