My daughter intends to major in theater and someone we trust has recommended Brandeis… the theater dept. looks great on the website…but I’d love to hear any firsthand reports. I know there have been some financial problems lately and although there are lots of courses listed, I wonder if they’re all offered regularly. Also wondering whether it’s a cohesive, welcoming department. Overall Brandeis seems just about perfect for D so we will likely visit no matter what but the more we can know about the theater department, the better. Thank you!

My son is a freshman who is also interested in theater. He is having the time of his life. He has already been in one show, and has been cast in two more. His theater classes are terrific. A lot of successful actors, writers, producers whose names currently escape me came from there. (The only ones I can think of are the people who created “Friends.”)

At the beginning of the year, they stage a 24-hour musical" It’s cast, sets are built, choreographed, etc, etc, all in one day. Then it’s presented to the school and they always get a full house. It’s a great way to get involved in the department and let them see what you can do.

Thank you so much, Buddy75-- this is very good to hear! We did visit and D just loved the college itself-- she’s been corresponding with a theater major but she’s afraid it won’t be as intensive a program as she wants. But hearing that your son is so involved as a freshman makes me very hopeful. Anything you can tell me I would love to know!

Brandeis theater program is top notch. Many professors at Emerson came from Brandeis. My son has now been in four productions. There are productions put on by the theater department, which are harder to get into if you aren’t in the department. But there are also many, many theatrical clubs that do terrific things. Debra Messing, the “Friends” creators, Jeff Calloway (“Memphis”), Bonita Hamilton “The Lion King”), Josh Mostel, and a bunch of others came from there.
