Based on older forums, I’ve heard a lot of mixed reviews about Brandeis’ theatre department, the Brandeis Theater Company…apparently undergraduates have a difficult time getting attention from professors? Losing roles to graduates in the MFA program?

Would anyone know if this still rings true?

Also, I’ve heard that a lot of “major changes” are happening in the department over the last few years. Would anyone know what these are?

I was accepted and would love to attend, but I’m majorly interested in what the theatre department has been going through in the past years. I know the extracurricular scene is fabulous, but if anyone could let me know, that’d be awesome.

I just enrolled at Brandeis within the last month after being reassured by undergraduates about the strength of the theater department. Professors are GREAT if you want to major in theater arts, and the Undergraduate Theater Collective puts on several shows each year. It’s really easy, it seems, to join UTC; that’s where the performance opportunities are. You can get involved in the department in a variety of ways (from what I’ve gathered, technical production on shows, maybe acting roles if you’re an upperclassmen – they don’t have any incoming MFA students for the 2014-2015 year), and alumni go on to do awesome theatrical work. Everyone I talked to discussed individual attention from professors and the strength of the major. Theatre is reportedly a very important thing at Brandeis and lots of kids like to do internships, some take on theater-related jobs during the summer. What was interesting for me was the proximity to Boston – the American Repertory Theater is like 20 minutes away. I might get a student membership if I take the shuttle there.
