I posted this in the musical theater thread, but I figured there might even be more people who could help answer my question here, since musical theater or acting majors are, obviously, not going to be minoring in theater.

Anyway, I was wondering what anyone here knew about minoring in theater at Ithaca. I didn't get in to any musical theater programs yet. I have one to hear from and one BFA acting to hear from too, but I don't have high hopes for either, so I'm exploring my alternatives, one of which is going to Ithaca, where I was accepted for English even though I was not accepted in to the musical theater program, and minoring in theater/getting private voice lessons and taking dance classes locally. I've emailed the theater department to ask them about the minor. It appears, from the wording on the website, that anyone can declare theater as a minor without an audition and it's not a ton of credits, but at least you leave with something that shows you did take theater courses. Any thoughts?

Maybe you could try to transfer into the theatre department after taking a couple of courses there? If you do well as a theatre minor, perhaps that they will notice you and want you as a full time theatre major. Good luck!

That would be extremely unlikely. Sorry. In fact, the chair of theater arts specifically warned against the thinking that attending Ithaca for another major is a 'back door' into the dept.

Yes, they said that at my audition. I'm not looking to do that. It's a great plan in theory, though. If I go for a theater minor I'll be looking at it more from the perspective of still continuing my training, not trying to work my way into the program. I mean, it's better than nothing. I know there are a few clubs on campus that put on student run plays and musicals and I think anyone can audition for mainstage shows, though I've heard it's rare for a non-major to be cast. So it seems I'll get decent opportunities... but I want to do all my research before forking over my deposit!

How about double majoring in Drama (BA Drama) and English? It's probably too late for interviewing for BA Drama but maybe you could add that once you are there as an English major?

Also, you could contact a student in one of the student theater groups and ask him or her about performance opportunities if you're not a major.

Hmm... that's really a decent option I didn't even think of... I mean, I wanted a BFA program, but since that didn't work out, I'm willing to consider BA. I'm going to look in to the credit amounts or maybe even flip flop for next year and do BA drama major/english minor. Thanks!

Are you sure about that? I go to IC and I thought anyone could get into the BA program, and I didn't think it required an audition (the BFA and BS programs do for theatre), I definitely have not heard anyone say that it's hard and I have a lot of friends in that program. Also, some BA majors DO get cast in the mainstage shows. However, as noted it is EXTREMELY unlikely to get cast if you are not a major...however, if you are interested in television/film they cast just about anyone for student films and tv shows.

I interviewed for it. No audition. They told me they take something like 30 kids and expect 15 or something to come. So, that's kind of similar to the acting and musical theatre's numbers (12 in each who actually come, I believe). And they say that they filter out those who are "BFA wannabees."

Don't quote me, this is just what I remember.

Oh yea, I presented a portfolio of all my directing work/crew work. So, I think they are looking for those who are really interested in the non-acting side of theatre and have experience to prove it.

I don't really have any new information to add to this discussion; I just wanted to say that I am also considering a Theatre minor, to accompany a B.S. in Cinema & Photography. Best of luck BroadwayBound88! (or should I say, Break a leg!!)
