Just wondering? Does this school have a great Theatre program?

We have a very strong and passionate Theatre department - check out videos of students in the department talking about their projects, internships and faculty

And there is an audition requirement?

If you want to perform, yes. The BFA (Bachelor of Fine Arts) in Theatre Production and the minor in Musical Theatre both require an audition.

More info can be found here: [Long Island, New York Programs and Courses - Drama and Dance - Hofstra University](http://www.hofstra.edu/academics/colleges/hclas/dd/dd_prog.html)

I can also put you in touch with a student currently in the Theatre program. Our student Pride Guides can answer any questions you have about Hofstra University - they’re quite the friendly bunch!

Dear HofstraRep, maybe you can clear this for me. I’m quite confused.
“Students interested in performance should prepare an audition consisting of two contrasting pieces, preferably one classical, of no more than two minutes each. Students who wish to sing should prepare one monologue and 32 bars of one song. Bring sheet music. An accompanist will be provided. No recorded accompaniment, please.”

What do the “two contrasting pieces” consist of? Is it two contrasting songs or two contrasting monologs? Also, the BFA in Theatre Arts doesn’t require an audition? Does the BFA in Theatre Arts have an emphasis on Musical Theatre? I would greatly appreciate an explanation about the audition process as well. Please and thank you.

Hi jaymarie731

I forwarded your question to our Theatre department and received the following answer:

"The audition requirements quoted are for the Activity Grant (Scholarship) auditions. There is NO AUDITION to become a B.A. in Drama.

We hold auditions for the B.F.A. in Theater Arts in the student’s sophomore year. Students may not apply to Hofstra for the B.F.A. program, all students who declare a drama major start as B.A. students.

We do not have an emphasis on Musical Theater in the B.F.A. in Performance, however, we do have a minor in Musical Theater that students can take in addition to the B.F.A. (or B.A.) to give them musical theater training.

The contrasting pieces, means either a monologue and a musical piece, or two monologues of contrasting styles – comedy/drama, classical/contemporary etc."

I hope this clears things up for you. Please let know if you have any further questions

Do you have any information as to the number of students who audition for the BFA program in the sophomore year vs. the number who are accepted into the program? My D is trying to figure out whether she wants to take the gamble with a program which she otherwise loves, at least after a visit. Thanks!

Hello MCActressDad,

We’re excited to learn that your D loved the program. Last year, 20 students auditioned and 75% of them were accepted. Please let me know if you would like more information or have any further questions.

Thanks! That’s certainly reassuring. My D has already been accepted to Hofstra, so this information is quite helpful.

Here’s another quick question, if you don’t mind: can you tell me what time of day the scholarship auditions are usually held? We’re supposed to be somewhere else that day, and we’d love to be able to do both if possible. Much obliged!

Does Hofstra still have the Shakespeare Festival and still use the Globe Theater set?

Yes, Hofstra still has the Shakespeare Festival (which is this weekend!) and still uses the Globe Theater set.

Hi! Stumbled on this thread and wondered if anyone could answer my question…
I’m a little confused. So I listed my major on CommonApp as theatre arts and I know that its a BA until I would audition at the end of sophomore year. But for the grant audition, would I submit that after, and if, I am accepted? And is the BA in Drama what a student is studying before they audition for the BFA? Thank you!
Hi @juliejordan! I think the assistant chair for advisement of the Drama Program will be able to help you out with these questions. Her contact information can be found here: http://www.hofstra.edu/Academics/Colleges/HCLAS/DD/dd-about.html
Please let me know if you have any additional questions!
