Theatre major - gateway process in sophomore year?

I read about admission to the theatre program uses a “gateway process for admission to majors occurs in the sophomore year”. How does this work? Are portfolio reviews still done as a high school senior but students are not admitted to the program until sophomore year at JMU?

@OrangeFish An audition or portfolio review is required as a high school senior (or transfer student), and you are admitted to the Theatre major as a freshman (or transfer student). First year students take classes in their primary area of interest(s), and courses designed to expose students to other areas of theatre outside of their current primary area(s). Second semester sophomore year students have the option to audition, interview, do a portfolio review to declare a concentration in Performance, Design Technology, Theatre Studies, Theatre Education. Students may opt to pursue multiple concentrations, or not to pursue a concentration at all.

Thank you, @KatMT – makes perfect sense now!
