Could you please rank the difficulty of getting into each department of JMU, such as business, english, science, etc like this.

I don't know about the other departments, but I can report what I know about business major. My son is a freshman, and will be majoring in business/accounting. The reason I say will be is because you can declare a business major as a freshman, however you apply to the business school in spring of sophmore year. You take 5 business classes freshman year, I don't know how many buriness classes in Fall of sophomore year. You need at least a 2.8 GPA overall in all your JMU classes to be accepted as a business major in your sophomore year. Even with the GPA, they said acceptance is not guaranteed.

School of Media Arts and Design, School of Music, and the Musical Theatre and Dance Concentrations in the School of Theatre & Dance at JMU require additional application materials/ audition, and acceptance is not guaranteed.

There are certain majors at JMU where you would audition or interview to declare as an incoming freshman (Dance, Music, Musical Theatre). Art and Art History students do not need to do a portfolio review as long as they declare before they start classes as a freshman.... although certain options do require a portfolio review in the freshman or sophomore year.

There are some JMU majors that you can declare without special permission..... I would suggest that you look in the online JMU catalog for the specific things that are required in order to be able to declare a certain major.

I just saw "Anyone Can Whistle".....pretty sure that's the name of the musical. It was GREAT! I visited for the William and Mary/JMU game. Fun time, but my Tribe lost!

Music/Musical Theater = Lots of talent at JMU....alive and well.

pedsox -- glad you liked it. It was produced by the student directed Experimental Theatre group on campus. Student directed, choreographed, music directed, designed, played, performed (obviously :)), etc, etc...

As the faculty adviser, I was very proud of the students work on the production.

KatM, I thought that was you on the program, but wasn't sure. My siblilng played piano for the musical.

So much talent at JMU!!! Amazing. Our entire group was very impressed.

Pedsox

Yeah! is your sibling MS? He also plays for one of my classes his semester. I think they had two keyboard on ACW, so your sibling may have been the other pianist, who I am not sure I got a chance to meet.

Happy Thanksgiving!

I'm pretty sure MS was the musical director for the entire musical. My sibling is a freshman and was listed on the program as the main pianist.

I look forward to seeing more while visiting JMU!

Is the college of education easy to get into?

i'd say nursing is the hardest bc i know lots of people who've gotten rejected the first time around and are still fighting for it. for education it's not that bad at all

ok thats waht i applied to, and is education major fairly new, cause it isnt listed on collegeboard as one of there majors?

i think education has been at jmaddy for a long time, especially since it used to be an all womens college, check the website

JMU definitely has education, I've had numerous student teachers that were from JMU. Also, they have a very good Music Education program.

I spoke to a JMU admissions officer that came to my HS (also i got accepted, w00t!) anyway, he said the hardest programs to "stay" in are pre-med and quantitative finance. thats a direct quote, also he said "those are the two programs that are good at weeding out alot of kids" (again not my opinion, its wat the admissions officer told me)

I can’t speak for the easiest… but I know that one of the hardest has to be Quantitative Finance.

Most kids that end up majoring in Q.Fin. end up triple majoring in Math and Economics as well.

Well… I am a Freshman at JMU now and I started out in Engineering and have already switched to Chemistry. I have always been interested in designing things, so I picked Engineering but I was NNOOTT prepared for the rigor of the Physics and Calculus classes here! Basically, many science classes (especially Physics) have to make major curves by the end of the semester because teachers fail everyone on tests. The highest average on a test so far in my Physics 240 class has been a 59!! In addition, my first Calculus test had to be curved by 15 points. People who get D’s in Physics (before the curve) end up with C’s and B’s as their final grade… The math and science departments here, if you give it your full effort will teach you to become geniouses! My calc teacher is a very great and bright professor… just very tough!

The music program is outstanding. I am part of the marching band and it is simply an amazing band because about 1/2 of the band is made up of music majors and they all play extremely well.

Communications, business, (esp. phsycology) are also great programs and I have heard a ton of students say they are completely happy.

All in all… There are many cases where you could study your tail off here and STILL fail… Its preeeeeeettttttyyyy tough here if you not used to a very rigorous high school load.
