Therapeutic Boarding Schools

The Answer Sheet - A father's story: Saving a troubled son

I don't know anything about such schools, but I thought this blog post could help those parents who come upon this forum in an internet search.

That was interesting thanks for posting.
One thing that struck me is the price tag- $84000 a year. That must be crushing to handle for a family that is already in pain and considering a therapeutic BS placement for their child. Convincing a school district to cover or help cover some of the cost is not an easy feat either. My heart goes out to those parents considering this option.

Sometimes the cost of therapeutic schools is paid by the local school district. We have two students in our little district in such schools and it costs us taxpayers over 175,000. I’m sure it depends on the reason for the placement and whether the parents can effectively advocate on their children’s behalf to have the appropriate labels attached by the powers that be (Committee on Special Education).

Our little district has a few students who’ve been “out-placed.” It can be very expensive, but an in-district child who’s out of control is also expensive to the district. Administrators’ time is very expensive. Once you add up the time devoted to such students by the assistant principals, principals, and school psychologists, in addition to the teacher time needed for “team meetings,” and aides-cum-watchers, the sum can rival the cost of the outplacement. That doesn’t even consider the value of the learning time the other students lose, nor the cost of the legal proceedings.

The two students I know who’ve been out-placed are reportedly doing better, but not as well as the boy described in the article.

Thank you. Powerful stuff.
