<p>I log on all the time looking for people who have stats like me, to see where their looking at, 3.5 W GPA 1850 SAT, and all I see is the harvard & MIT crowd with 2300 SATs and 4.0 UW GPA's wondering what their chances are even though the ivies are so unpredictable that no one could possibly give chances. I am venting a little bit, but does this frustrate anyone else?</p>
<p>Usually the smartest kids are the ones who are most insecure and lack confidence. Thats why they are on this site fishing for compliments. I mean, you see kids with 2400s and 4.0s asking if they have a chance at a college. Come on now.</p>
<p>And some of them , shall we say, stretch the truth…People who ask for chances make me laugh. Not sure why they think the people on CC have fortune telling powers, because you are right, lots of high stats students get turned away from Ivies…</p>

<p>Hahahh lol, thats how I feel when I log on to. It makes me (a 3.3 kid w/ 29 ACT) feel like I’ll be lucky to get into a CC! : ) highfive for some normal kids (or just honest) on this site!</p>

<p>@vlines - I do understand the chancing thread though. Some people, myself included are a little too ambitious when it comes to picking schools they could get into, schools that they wouldn’t get into realistically and it is nice to have someone impartial to tell you whether or not you have a shot. It is reassuring, but I do agree with you on the ivies thing though. There really is no telling.</p>
<p>I wouldn’t be on this site if I didn’t have stellar test scores, because I would realize I had no chance at top schools. Why join CC to ask if your 1600 is good enough for a local community college or to ask for help on your application to devry? See what I’m getting at…</p>
<p>I understand what your saying, but a 1600 can still get you into some decent schools. Nothing great, but more than a CC.</p>
<p>Trust me, I’m not at the level of a lot of people on here, top 5% in the real world is maybe top 50% on CC. I know what you feel like and what you mean.</p>
<p>If you read the Parents threads, many of us have normal kids. It appears that most of our kids don’t come on CC.</p>
<p>I hate how stressful college is. Worrying if I get in, etc. luckily I should know in about a month or 2 when I get my EA acceptance(hopefully) letters.</p>
<p>Reading these threads would give you the impression that the average SAT is, oh, 2100/2400. It isn’t; it’s 1500 (by design). You’d also get the impression that the typical safety school is one with, oh, 35% selectivity, and that only mental defective go to non-flagship state schools. </p>

<p>Of course a forum like this won’t attract a representative cross-section of all college applicants. Most of the 3000+ American colleges and universities will admit nearly anyone. College Confidential students and parents who agonize over choices are mostly focused on a small handful of those schools, such as these: [50</a> Top Colleges](<a href=“http://50topcolleges.com/]50”>http://50topcolleges.com/) . What would be the point of spending much time on this forum if you’re an average student focusing on a couple of local public schools? </p>
<p>The schools on “50topcolleges.com” admit between 7% and about 60% of applicants. Mean SATs run between 2000 and 2200 or so. Quite a few schools that get good representation on CC would be at or below the lower end of this range. Mount Holyoke College, for example, has an average GPA of 3.66 and mean SATs of 1995 (a little higher than the OP’s stats). Similar colleges that don’t make the “50topcolleges” cut include Smith, Trinity, Connecticut College, and Kenyon. Many state flagships would be a bit less selective than the 6 listed.</p>

there are some incredible students, there may be some that “exaggerate”, but if you sift through things you can find valuable info…</p>

<p>About 2.5 million high school students in this country go to college every year, so a lot fewer than 9% end up at HYPS. There are probably only about 100,000 freshman seats, or about 4% of the total, available at very selective colleges (including but not limited to HYPS). The vast majority of smart, capable kids do not go to HYPS and other super selective schools. They turn out fine and the OP will too.</p>
<p>I think that one of the groups that’s particularly drawn to CC is the high-achievement crowd, who don’t have many peers with similar stats or aspirations. A lot of times, those students would feel awkward talking about their aspirations with other acquaintances even if they had the opportunity, because it might feel as if they’re boasting or putting on airs.</p>
<p>Check out the 3.0-3.3 parents forums (one for the western kid, one for jewish kids, and another for 2012’ers) all together they cover some really good schools across the map. And I started a thread for 3.0-3.3 kids too! So we’re a growing minority (slowly speaking up lol).</p>

Fact check: Including grad students, there are approximately 14,000,000 college students in the U.S., of which about 63,000, or less than 1/2 of 1%, are at HYPS.</p>
