Things to do this summer?

I'm a computer science major (freshman) at UC Berkeley, and I'm wondering what to do this summer. I'm hoping CC can suggest some nice summer conferences, interships, or opportunities. I just heard about HPAIR. but it's too late to apply. If possible, I'd like to do something pertaining to my career. But I also welcome summer conferences held by top colleges.

thanks.

Internships (often paid). In California, I’m sure you can find some through your career services office on campus.

Aside from internships and research or summer education, you can still be productive in the summer. Volunteer with Habitat for Humanity or do something with Outward Bound maybe.

Look for those that take Freshman. Most look for Juniors but there are some just looking for students interested in research. I’d think that your school would have lots of research opportunities and you might take a look at the webpages of the professors in your department to see what research they are working on. You might find something that interests you. If you do, you could ask the professor if you could work on his project.

Take a look at the Google Summer of Code when they set up their page for Summer 2010.

Look at the jobs websites for the companies in your area to see what internships they offer.
