Hey guys, just wondering if there are anything you guys wished you’ve known before you started your college life. Any tips for us fresh out of high school lol? Anything we should watch out for at Davis? Perhaps some professor or maybe some great opportunity. Anything.

Play intramural sports, make friends, have fun, and get an internship ASAP when you get to Davis. Balance and time management are the key to your success.

The coffee in the coffee house generally sucks. But when you have to go to Latin every day at 9 in the morning, you generally become willing to imbibe anything as long as it is caffeinated. But their cookies make up for it, I suppose...

Haha I actually agree about the CoHo coffee... the coffee at the Cargo Coffee stands tends to be a lot better (check the wiki).

I'll probably post more here later, but for now I'll just say this: if you're anything like me, you will NOT have time to do everything you want to do.

The soda at the silo bookstore is cheaper than the same exact soda in the silo.

AND, to add to the above comment, if you're ever looking for a snack or drink and don't have cash, you can get it at the Silo Bookstore and put it on your student account!

:)

open your mind. if you pigeonhole people into certain stereotypes based on preconceived notions of their personality you'll regret it, a lot of the kids are davis are a lot deeper than they appear. lol

Unless you're doing some crazy intense major that takes up all 180 units, trying a few different subject areas never hurts.

well im EE and im told we dont get too much space to explore lol

btw thanks for the responses guys

make the GEs count =)

Another bumpable thread. :)

Read the Aggie

Do NOT park your car at University Mall (U Mall)

Lock your bike to a bike rack, and not just the front wheel (seems like common sense, doesn’t it?)

Don’t get an expensive, shiny new bike

get a bike fender by December

Definitely go to the activities fair, sign up for all the clubs you’re interested in, then decide which ones to keep.

Do not miss picnic day, whole earth festival

Go to the Farmer’s Market… it’s a lot more interesting than you might imagine

Try not to play WoW… this is by observation. Destroys the social lives of more than a few. At least when you’re playing games like Warcraft, you can be interacting with your dorm mates

Return your textbooks before finals, if you don’t need it, and get a really good deal on the buyback

Force yourself to stay in the library if you really want to get work done. Dorm study lounges only work if everyone is working… as soon as someone starts joking around it’s over! Good memories though.

There are a lot of free movies, free ice cream, etc. on campus and around Davis. Make friends with older students and they’ll surely let you know of these

thanks everyone, its great to have something like this before we all go off to college

Work hard first quarter. It’s a lot easier (in terms of motivation) to keep up a good GPA rather than try to bring up an ok gpa.

Use tutors at the math building and LRC for math questions.

Don’t be shy, seek out professors and upperclassmen for information cuz they know a lot more than you about everything.

Be nice to your professors, you never know when you might need to write an e-mail b/c you’re at 89.85% and want an A- instead of a B+. Or for that matter, a letter of recommendation. So go to office hours a few times, even if it is just for face time and make sure the professor knows who you are. You have no idea how many times I’ve had grades raised b/c the professor knew me. It’s a game, play it.

Seek out every opportunity to have fun and every opportunity to add something to your resume (internships, research, clubs). College is about learning having fun, but it’s also about getting a job/going to a grad school in the future that you like (where you won’t regret partying everyday and playing xbox).

Don’t eat too much, or else you’ll turn humongous after the 1st or 2nd quarter. I’ve seen it happen!

When you study in class, you better make sure you understand what you’re learning. It’s more than just about getting an A. If you just get an A, and don’t understand anything, then you’re just screwed for the next class (e.g. Econ 1A -> Econ 100).

Try making multiple groups of friends.

Lastly, go crazy. Smart/successful people are sometimes the wildest and most daring =). Good luck.

Actually, I love CoHo coffee (brewed). It’s fair-trade, organic, and freshly brewed. Plus, it’s deliciously cheap. Much more effective and cheaper than Starbucks/Peets.

Make sure to buy your books from the Book Exchange, Davis Textbooks, Culpepper books, Uloop, or online. The UCD bookstore is WAY too expensive.

and then there’s davistext.com

thats deep dude i agree
